How our paycheck engine calculates take-home

  1. 1.Start with gross wages

This is your P60/P45 box 1 starting point. We treat the annual number you type as ordinary employment income taxed through PAYE.

  2. 2.Apply the personal allowance

The standard personal allowance is £12,570 for 2026/27. Marriage Allowance (+£1,260) and Blind Person's Allowance (+£3,070) can extend the 0% band. Taper above £100,000 is applied automatically when your salary exceeds that level.

  3. 3.Calculate income tax (progressive bands)

England, Wales, and Northern Ireland use 20%, 40%, and 45% bands. Scotland uses six bands from 19% to 48%. Tax is marginal stacking — only the slice above each threshold pays the higher rate.

  4. 4.Add Class 1 National Insurance on gross

From 6 January 2024 the main NI rate was cut from 12% to 8%. There is no employee NI on earnings below the primary threshold (£12,570/year). NI is calculated on gross pay, not after income tax.

  5. 5.Take-home pay

Effective rate = (income tax + NI) ÷ gross. Marginal rate = income tax band on the next pound + NI rate (8% or 2%) where applicable.

FAQ

For tax year 2026/27, England, Wales and Northern Ireland use a personal allowance of £12,570, then 20% basic, 40% higher, and 45% additional rate. Scotland sets its own bands (19%–48%) via Revenue Scotland. National Insurance is the same UK-wide.

Class 1 employee NI is 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above that. NI is calculated on gross pay, not after income tax.

Yes. Scotland sets its own income tax bands via Revenue Scotland — starter 19%, basic 20%, intermediate 21%, higher 42%, advanced 45%, and top 48%. Open the Scotland Tax Insights profile for a full ladder versus rUK.

For a single PAYE earner with no student loan (tax year 2026/27), our engine estimates about £68,557 take-home in England/Wales/NI vs £65,257 in Scotland — a gap of roughly £3,300/year driven by Scottish income tax bands.

At £75,000 gross (single PAYE, no student loan), estimated take-home is about £54,057 in England/Wales/NI vs £52,007 in Scotland — roughly £2,050/year difference.

No. Standard Insights ladders show income tax + Class 1 NI only so regions are apples-to-apples. Add a student loan plan in the UK paycheck calculator for a personalized figure.

Above £100,000 of adjusted net income, the personal allowance is tapered by £1 for every £2 of income until it reaches zero. That is why effective rates jump around £100k–£125k even before higher/additional rate bands fully apply.

Tax Insights pages are editorial hubs: HMRC/Revenue Scotland facts, salary ladders, city salary guides, FAQs, and sources. The UK and Scotland calculators let you change tax code options, student loans, and pension contributions.

Online Self Assessment is typically due 31 January following the end of the tax year (6 April–5 April). Most PAYE employees do not file unless they have other income or complex circumstances — confirm on GOV.UK.

We publish “is it enough?” guides for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Glasgow across common salary tiers — linked in the salary guides section below. Figures use the same PAYE engine as this hub.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland share HMRC rUK bands and are covered on this hub. Scotland has its own profile at /tax-insights/united-kingdom/scotland because Revenue Scotland sets distinct income tax bands.
