Key takeaways — Netherlands tax 2026

  • Box 1 wage tax (loonbelasting) for 2026 uses progressive rates 8.10–49.50% — brackets at 38.883 € and 78.426 €.
  • National insurance (volksverzekeringen) is 27.65% on first-bracket income only (ceiling 38.883 €), so the combined first-bracket rate is 35.75% before credits.
  • Heffingskortingen reduce loonheffing: algemene heffingskorting max 3.115 € and arbeidskorting max 5.685 € (non-AOW tables). Credits cannot push loonheffing below zero.
  • This standard salary ladder does not apply the 30%-regeling. Toggle the ruling on the Netherlands calculator when you qualify as a highly skilled migrant.
  • At 48.000 € gross (standard employee, no 30% ruling), take-home from our engine is 38.150 € — wage tax 6.574 €, NI 10.751 €, credits 7.475 € (20.5% effective after credits).
  • At 75.000 € gross, take-home from our engine is 51.523 € (31.3% effective rate after credits).
  • Nationwide Box 1 model for employees — there is no separate municipal wage-tax schedule layered onto these loonheffing brackets.
  • Confirm against your loonstrook, Belastingdienst tables, and jaaropgave. Employer premiums and Box 2/3 are excluded.

How Netherlands take-home works for 2026

Most employees see bruto salaris, loonheffing (wage tax + national insurance minus heffingskortingen), and netto salaris on the loonstrook. This hub estimates annual Box 1 employment tax for a standard employee without the 30%-regeling — the same path as our Netherlands salary calculator.

Wage tax is progressive (8.10–49.50%). Volksverzekeringen (27.65%) apply only to income in the first bracket (ceiling 38.883 €), so the combined first-bracket rate is 35.75% before credits.

Rates follow Belastingdienst 2026 tables. Confirm against your payslip and official heffingskorting tables.

Wage tax, national insurance, and heffingskortingen

Loonbelasting uses three bands: 8.10% up to 38.883 €, then 37.56% to 78.426 €, then 49.50% above that.

National insurance (AOW + Anw + Wlz) is 27.65% on first-bracket income only — income above 38.883 € does not attract additional volksverzekeringen in this model.

Algemene heffingskorting (max 3.115 €) and arbeidskorting (max 5.685 €) reduce loonheffing euro-for-euro until the liability hits zero. This hub uses non-AOW credit tables.

30% ruling (optional) and what stays outside the model

The 30%-regeling can make up to 30% of salary tax-free for eligible highly skilled migrants, subject to Belastingdienst norms and the WNT cap. This Tax Insights ladder keeps the ruling off so figures stay comparable across salary bands.

Open the Netherlands calculator and enable the ruling when you need that scenario. Thresholds and caps are documented in the methodology constants.

Holiday allowance (vakantiegeld), AOW-age credit tables, employer social premiums, and Box 2/3 income are excluded so the ladder stays comparable.

Nationwide Box 1 — no municipal wage tax on these brackets

Living in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, or elsewhere does not change the national Box 1 wage-tax brackets or first-bracket NI rules in this model. There is no additional municipal wage-tax schedule layered onto these salary ladders.

Cost of living still varies sharply by city. Use Tax Insights for loonheffing math, and lifestyle or city guides for rent and spending context.

Partner filing, mortgage interest, and other aangifte adjustments can change final liability even when monthly withholding looks consistent.

Tax Insights vs the salary calculator

Tax Insights is the editorial hub: Belastingdienst facts, salary ladders, methodology, glossary, FAQs, and sources.

The Netherlands calculator lets you change gross income and optionally apply the 30%-regeling with the same engine.

Both surfaces use Box 1 wage tax, first-bracket-only national insurance, and non-AOW heffingskortingen.

How we calculate Netherlands take-home

Same order of operations as the Netherlands salary calculator methodology — optional 30% ruling, Box 1 wage tax, first-bracket national insurance, heffingskortingen, then netto salaris.

  1. 1.Start with bruto employment income

Your contracted salary before loonheffing. Employer premiums are not deducted from netto salaris.

  2. 2.Optional 30% ruling

If the 30%-regeling applies, tax-free reimbursement is the lesser of 30% of gross, the WNT cap (€78,600 in 2026), and the amount that keeps taxable salary at/above the Belastingdienst norm (€48,013, or €36,497 under 30 with a qualifying master’s).

  3. 3.Calculate Box 1 wage tax

    Progressive loonbelasting: 8.10% up to €38,883, 37.56% from €38,883 to €78,426, and 49.50% above €78,426 (2026 Belastingdienst).

  4. 4.Add national insurance (volksverzekeringen)

AOW + Anw + Wlz apply only to income in the first bracket. Combined with 8.10% wage tax, the first-bracket rate is 35.75% before credits.

  5. 5.Subtract heffingskortingen

2026 non-AOW tables: algemene heffingskorting max €3,115 (phases out above €29,736); arbeidskorting max €5,685 (phases out above €45,592).

  6. 6.Netto salaris

Loonheffing cannot go below zero from credits alone. Effective rate = loonheffing ÷ bruto.

Netherlands take-home checklist

  • Apply Box 1 wage-tax brackets to taxable income.
  • Add national insurance at 27.65% on income up to 38.883 € only.
  • Subtract algemene heffingskorting and arbeidskorting (non-AOW tables unless you are AOW-age).

  • Cross-check against your loonstrook, jaaropgave, and Belastingdienst sources.

What this model excludes

Keeping the ladder comparable means omitting items that belong in a full compensation model:

  • Holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) as a separate 8% layer unless included in the bruto you enter
  • AOW-age heffingskorting tables (lower credit amounts)
  • Employer social premiums (employer-only costs)
  • Box 2 / Box 3 income (shareholdings, savings & investments)
  • Mortgage interest, partner filing, and other aangifte adjustments
  • Exact Belastingdienst payroll-table rounding per pay period
