FAQ

For tax year 2026, Ireland uses a standard rate of 20% up to the standard rate band (€44,000 for single persons), then 40% above. Personal tax credit €2,000 + employee (PAYE) credit €2,000 reduce tax payable. USC and PRSI are separate charges.

Universal Social Charge (USC) is progressive: 0.5% up to €12,012, 2% to €28,700, 3% to €70,044, 8% above. No USC if total income ≤ €13,000. USC applies to gross pay, not after income tax.

PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) for employees is 4.2% on ALL gross earnings from 1 Oct 2025. A tapering annual credit (max €624 at €18,304, zero above €22,048) reduces the charge. No PRSI at or below €18,304/year.

For a single PAYE earner with full tax credits (tax year 2026), our engine estimates about 64.569 € take-home at €100,000 gross. That's income tax 27.200 €, USC 4.031 €, PRSI 4.200 € — 35.4% effective rate.

No. Ireland has nationwide Revenue PAYE — no city or county wage tax. Everyone uses the same income tax bands, USC, and PRSI. Cost of living varies by location, not payroll tax.

Personal tax credit €2,000 + employee (PAYE) credit €2,000 = €4,000 total for single employees in 2026. Tax credits reduce income tax payable after brackets are applied.

The standard rate band is the income threshold taxed at 20%. For single persons: €44,000. Lone parent: €48,000. Married one income: €53,000. Married two incomes: up to €88,000. Income above the band is taxed at 40%.

Pay and File for self-assessed taxpayers is typically mid-November following the end of the tax year (1 Jan–31 Dec). Most PAYE employees do not file unless they have other income — confirm on revenue.ie.

We publish "is it enough?" guides for Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny, Drogheda, and Sligo across 8 salary tiers — linked in the salary guides section below. Figures use the same PAYE engine as this hub.
