EI pays maternity at 55% (max $729) for 15 weeks, then parental at 55% or extended 33% (Canada.ca / CEIC 2026 maxima).
Ontario matches every other non-Québec province on federal EI cash benefits. Differences vs Québec come from QPIP rates and Québec’s higher MIE, not from a different EI table in Ontario.
Always confirm insured hours (EI guideline: 600), best-weeks, or QPIP qualifying-period rules before relying on an estimate.
EI maternity can start up to 12 weeks before due date/birth. Standard parental must fit in 52 weeks from birth/placement; extended in 78 weeks.
Job-protected leave under employment standards is a separate clock from benefit payment weeks.
Estimate EI weeks and dollars before leave, then confirm with Service Canada or RQAP.
Sharing unlocks 40 standard or 69 extended parental weeks in the family pool (one parent still capped at 35 / 61).
EI parental benefits also cover newly adopted children; maternity weeks apply only to the person who gave birth.
Model top-ups against EI/QPIP ceilings and separate employment-standards job protection from benefit payment weeks.

Canada.ca guideline: 600 insured hours in the 52 weeks before your claim or since your last claim (whichever is shorter).
Your regular weekly earnings from work must have decreased by more than 40% for at least one week.
Start as early as 12 weeks before due date or birth; cannot receive maternity more than 17 weeks after the later of those dates.
Standard parental within 52 weeks of birth/placement; extended within 78 weeks. Weeks need not be consecutive, but must fall inside the window.
Apply to QPIP/RQAP for maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption benefits — not federal EI maternity/parental for the same event.
Canada.ca advises applying as soon as possible after you stop working; waiting more than 4 weeks can risk lost benefits.
Use Service Canada / Canada.ca EI maternity-parental guidance; Québec residents should not use this path for the same birth.
Standard vs extended parental is locked after the first parental payment. Model both options first.
Many employers offer SUB top-ups keyed to EI/QPIP ceilings. Ask early — top-ups are outside this ranking.
Check Ontario employment standards (or the Canada Labour Code) for unpaid leave length separately from benefit weeks.
Cash maternity/parental benefits outside Québec are federal EI, the same in Alberta as in Ontario. Provincial taxes do not set EI week rates.
Canada.ca states Québec provides maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption benefits through QPIP. Québec residents use QPIP/RQAP instead of federal EI maternity/parental for the same birth/adoption.
Extended parental is 33% of average weekly earnings, capped at $437 in 2026 — lower weekly payments than the 55% / $729 standard option (Canada.ca).
EI/QPIP pay for a set number of weeks. Provincial employment standards can provide longer unpaid job-protected leave than the weeks you receive benefits.
$729 (2026) is the weekly ceiling for 55% benefits. Below the EI MIE, you receive 55% (or 33% extended) of your average weekly insurable earnings.
Canada.ca: once a parental benefits payment has been made for the birth or adoption (to you or a sharing parent), the standard/extended option generally cannot be changed.
Québec.ca: both parents must choose the same plan. The first parent who applies locks the plan for the family for that benefit period.
Canada.ca lists 600 insured hours as an eligibility guideline for EI maternity/parental. Employer agreement does not replace insured-hours rules — Service Canada decides.
