- When sharing, one parent cannot take more than 35 parental weeks. Up to 5 extra weeks are available only to the other parent(s).
Outside Québec we apply federal EI maternity (15 weeks at 55%) and parental benefits (standard 55% or extended 33%), capped at the 2026 CEIC weekly maxima, with weekly amounts rounded to the nearest dollar (half-up per the EI Act). Québec residents use QPIP/RQAP instead: basic or special plan weeks and rates from Québec.ca, with benefits based on average weekly insurable earnings capped at the 2026 QPIP MIE. This estimate uses annual earnings ÷ 52 (not regional EI “best weeks” or QPIP 26-week ROE detail). An optional EI waiting-period note is timing-only and does not reduce entitled dollars.
| Tax year | 2026 |
|---|---|
| EI max weekly (55%) | $729 |
| EI Natalie-style total (max) | $36,450 |
| QPIP basic total @ MIE | $61,899.00 |
Formulas
- EI weekly (standard / maternity):
min(round_half_up(avg weekly × 55%), $729) — avg weekly capped by $68,900 ÷ 52 - EI weekly (extended parental):
min(round_half_up(avg weekly × 33%), $437) - QPIP weekly:
round¢(min(avg weekly, $103,000 ÷ 52) × 75% / 70% / 55%) - Total benefits:
sum(weekly × weeks) for each benefit segment (waiting period does not subtract)
Steps
- Choose program. EI for outside Québec; QPIP for Québec residents (federal EI maternity/parental not available for the same birth/adoption).
- Convert earnings to a weekly average. Annual insurable earnings ÷ 52, then cap at the program MIE weekly equivalent.
- Apply replacement rates and week caps. EI: maternity 15 @ 55%; parental standard ≤35 (40 shared) or extended ≤61 (69 shared). QPIP: maternity/paternity/adoption exclusives + shareable parental by plan (basic pool: first 7 shareable @ 70%).
- Sum segments. Add each benefit type’s weekly × weeks. Optional EI waiting-period note is timing only.
Not included
- • EI regional “best weeks” (14–22) unemployment-rate adjustment
- • EI family supplement (net family income ≤ $25,921)
- • Employer top-ups / Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB) plans
- • QPIP low-earnings increase (minimum-wage floor) and low family-income increase
- • QPIP additional shareable bonus weeks when both parents meet the week thresholds (noted, not auto-added to totals)
- • Full chronological assignment of basic-plan 70% weeks across two parents’ overlapping calendars (optional “already paid” adjustment available)
- • Detailed adoption-only tables beyond exclusive + shareable modeling
- • Tax withholding on benefits (benefits are taxable)
- • Full insured-hours / residency adjudication
Key takeaways — maternity & parental leave
- For 2026, federal EI maternity and standard parental pay 55% of average insurable weekly earnings up to $729/week (MIE $68,900).
- Extended EI parental pays 33% up to $437/week for more weeks. Maternity stays at 55% even if parental is extended.
- Québec residents use QPIP instead of EI maternity/parental. 2026 QPIP MIE is $103,000 — higher weekly ceilings than EI at the same salary.
- QPIP basic plan: more weeks at 70%/55%. Special plan: fewer weeks at 75%. The first parent’s plan choice binds both parents.
- EI sharing adds 5 standard or 8 extended parental weeks, but one parent still cannot exceed 35 / 61 weeks.
What this calculator estimates
Maternity and parental leave benefits replace part of your income while you are away from work for pregnancy, birth, or caring for a newborn or newly adopted child. Outside Québec that is federal Employment Insurance (EI). In Québec it is the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP / RQAP).
This tool estimates weekly amounts and total dollars from your average insurable earnings, benefit type, and how many weeks you take. It is educational — Service Canada or RQAP decides your official claim.
Federal EI maternity and parental
Maternity benefits (birth parent only) run up to 15 weeks at 55%, capped at $729/week in 2026. They cannot be shared.
Parental benefits: standard (higher weekly, fewer weeks — up to 35 for one parent, 40 when shared) or extended (33%, up to 61 / 69 when shared). Once a parental week is paid, the option cannot be changed.
Eligibility typically requires 600 insured hours and a >40% drop in weekly earnings. A one-week waiting period normally delays the first payment but does not reduce entitled weeks; a temporary waiver covers many claims starting between March 30, 2025 and October 10, 2026.
Québec QPIP (basic vs special)
QPIP covers maternity, paternity (exclusive to the parent who did not give birth), shareable parental, and adoption benefits. You choose the basic (longer) or special (higher %) plan; the first parent to apply locks the plan for both. Eligibility generally requires at least $2,000 of insurable earnings in the qualifying period.
Basic: maternity 18 weeks at 70%; paternity/exclusive 5 at 70%; shareable parental 32 weeks (the family’s first 7 shareable weeks at 70%, next 25 at 55%). Special: maternity 15 at 75%; paternity/exclusive 3 at 75%; shareable parental 25 at 75%.
Benefits are based on average weekly insurable earnings, capped at the 2026 MIE of $103,000. Wage earners usually use the last 26 weeks of the qualifying period — this tool approximates with annual ÷ 52.

Worked examples
Canada.ca Natalie pattern — EI standard at max
50 weeks (15 maternity + 35 parental) → $36,450. Partner can take up to 5 parental weeks.
Canada.ca Kelsey pattern — EI extended at max
76 weeks (15 + 61) → $37,592 (maternity still $729/wk; parental $437/wk).
QPIP basic at MIE — birth parent, 32 shareable
50 weeks → $61,899.00 (18 maternity @ 70% + shareable 70%/55%).
QPIP special at MIE — birth parent, 25 shareable
40 weeks → $59,423.20 (all at 75%).
Myths vs facts
“Québec parents claim federal EI maternity.”
Québec runs QPIP for maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption. Federal EI maternity/parental is not paid for the same event.
“Extended EI parental also lowers maternity to 33%.”
Maternity stays at 55% (up to the standard max). Only parental weeks use the 33% extended rate.
“I can switch from standard to extended after payments start.”
Once a parental benefit week is paid (to you or the other parent when sharing), the option is locked.
“QPIP special always pays more total dollars.”
Special pays a higher weekly % for fewer weeks. Compare totals for your earnings — basic often wins on total dollars at high income.

Common mistakes
- •Choosing EI when you live in Québec (or QPIP when you don’t)
- •Assuming maternity weeks can be shared with a partner
- •Picking extended EI without checking that maternity stays at 55%
- •Forgetting that EI sharing extras (5/8 weeks) are use-it-or-lose-it for the other parent
- •Assuming the EI waiting period reduces your entitled weeks (it usually only delays the first payment)
- •Ignoring employer top-ups when comparing leave options
- •Treating this estimate as an eligibility decision (600 hours / $2,000 rules still apply)
Checklist before you apply
- Confirm whether you are under EI or QPIP (Québec residence)
- Gather average weekly / annual insurable earnings and Records of Employment
- Decide standard vs extended (EI) or basic vs special (QPIP) before the first parental payment
- Coordinate sharing weeks with the other parent
- Ask HR about any employer top-up / SUB plan
- Apply with Service Canada or RQAP as soon as you stop work
Glossary
- Insurable earnings
- Employment income that EI or QPIP premiums were paid on — wages, tips, bonuses, commissions (as CRA defines).
- MIE
- Maximum insurable earnings — annual ceiling that caps premiums and benefit calculations.
- Standard vs extended (EI)
- Parental options: higher weekly for fewer weeks (55%) vs lower weekly for more weeks (33%).
- Basic vs special (QPIP)
- Québec plans: longer leave at 70%/55% vs shorter leave at 75%.
- Waiting period
- Usually one unpaid EI week before payments start; it does not reduce entitled benefit weeks. Often waived under temporary 2025–2026 measures.
- Top-up
- Employer SUB plan that may top up EI/QPIP benefits — not included in this estimate.
