How to read British Columbia vs Ontario

Identical EI totals are expected outside Québec. Use the plan ladder to compare standard vs extended parental on the same earnings.

Maternity weekly on the vignette: British Columbia $729.00 vs Ontario $729.00.

Moving between these provinces does not change federal EI maternity/parental week rates — focus on employer top-ups and employment-standards leave length.

Official rules that still apply to both

EI: standard/extended lock-in after first parental payment; parental windows 52 vs 78 weeks (Canada.ca).

QPIP: basic/special lock-in by first application; both parents must share one plan (Québec.ca).

Benefits are generally taxable; job-protected leave is a separate employment-standards question.

EI best-weeks regional adjustment, family supplement, and employer SUB top-ups.

QPIP low-earnings increase and detailed 26-week wage-earner averaging.

Plan decisions that affect both sides

Standard (55%)

Higher weekly payments (max $729) for fewer weeks — up to 35 for one parent / 40 shared. Must be taken within 52 weeks of birth/placement.

Extended (33%)

Lower weekly payments (max $437) for more weeks — up to 61 / 69 shared, within 78 weeks. Maternity stays at 55%.

Lock-in rule

Canada.ca: once a parental payment is made for that birth/adoption, you generally cannot switch between standard and extended.

Common myths vs official rules

“Alberta has no maternity benefits because it has no provincial sales tax.”

Cash maternity/parental benefits outside Québec are federal EI, the same in Alberta as in Ontario. Provincial taxes do not set EI week rates.

“Québec parents still claim federal EI maternity.”

Canada.ca states Québec provides maternity, paternity, parental, and adoption benefits through QPIP. Québec residents use QPIP/RQAP instead of federal EI maternity/parental for the same birth/adoption.

“Extended parental pays the same weekly amount for longer.”

Extended parental is 33% of average weekly earnings, capped at $437 in 2026 — lower weekly payments than the 55% / $729 standard option (Canada.ca).

“EI weeks equal my job-protected leave.”

EI/QPIP pay for a set number of weeks. Provincial employment standards can provide longer unpaid job-protected leave than the weeks you receive benefits.

“Everyone gets the $729 maximum.”

$729 (2026) is the weekly ceiling for 55% benefits. Below the EI MIE, you receive 55% (or 33% extended) of your average weekly insurable earnings.

“I can switch from extended to standard after payments start.”

Canada.ca: once a parental benefits payment has been made for the birth or adoption (to you or a sharing parent), the standard/extended option generally cannot be changed.
