Add or remove VAT for invoices, quotes, and receipts.

The VAT amount and total (or ex-VAT price) above come from the amount, rate, and add/remove mode you enter — not a live HMRC feed. Rates match published UK VAT bands on gov.uk. Below are the formulas, steps, and worked examples from the same engine as the live calculator.

Worked example — add 20%

Add 20% VAT — £5,000.00 net

ModeAdd VAT
Net amount£5,000.00

Gross total£6,000.00

£5,000.00 × 20% = £1,000.00 VAT → £6,000.00 gross

Net (ex-VAT)£5,000.00
VAT embedded£1,000.00

£6,000.00 ÷ 1.20 = £5,000.00 net; VAT = £1,000.00

Reduced rate (5%)

£100.00 × 5% = £5.00 VAT → £105.00 gross

Formulas

  • Add VAT — VAT amount: VAT = Net price × (Rate % ÷ 100)
  • Add VAT — gross total: Gross = Net + VAT
  • Remove VAT — net price: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate % ÷ 100)
  • Remove VAT — VAT embedded: VAT = Gross − Net
  • Rounding: All GBP amounts rounded to the nearest penny (2 decimal places)

Calculation steps

  1. Choose the VAT rate
    Standard 20%, reduced 5%, zero 0%, or a custom %

Most goods and services use the standard rate. Reduced and zero rates apply only to qualifying supplies — check HMRC guidance for your product.

  2. Choose add or remove mode
Add: amount is ex-VAT · Remove: amount includes VAT

Add mode prices a shelf/net figure up to a customer total. Remove mode backs VAT out of an invoice or receipt gross.

  3. Add VAT
VAT = Amount × Rate; Gross = Amount + VAT

Multiply the net price by the rate, then add VAT to get the gross.

  4. Remove VAT
    Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate); VAT = Gross − Net

Because Gross = Net × (1 + Rate), divide the VAT-inclusive total by (1 + rate) to isolate the net.

  5. Round to pence
    round(value, 2) — half-up to 2 decimals

Matches typical invoice rounding. Tiny differences can appear if you add then remove on odd amounts.

Adding 20% VAT to £5,000

Start with a net price of £5,000. Multiply by 0.2 to get VAT of £1,000.00, then add for a customer total of £6,000.00.

This is the usual calculation for standard-rated goods and services sold by a VAT-registered business. On an invoice, list net, rate, VAT, and gross separately.

Reduced-rate check at £5,000

If HMRC treats the supply as reduced-rated, VAT drops to £250.00 and the gross is £5,250.00 — £750.00 less than the standard-rated gross.

Reduced rate is not automatic for “cheap” or “essential” items — only qualifying categories under HMRC rules (for example children’s car seats and domestic fuel/power when conditions apply).

Zero-rated vs £5,000 at standard rate

A zero-rated supply at £5,000 net has £0.00 VAT. Compared with standard rate, the customer saves £1,000.00 on this line.

Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, but catering, hot takeaways, alcohol, confectionery, and many soft drinks are standard-rated — check HMRC notices before assuming 0%.

Working backwards from a VAT-inclusive total

If a receipt shows £6,000.00 including 20% VAT, the net is £5,000.00.

Use remove mode whenever the amount you see already includes VAT. The 20% VAT fraction shortcut is gross × (20 ÷ 120) = gross × 1/6.

When this amount shows up in real life

£5,000 is a common quote, deposit, or line-item size for freelancers and small traders. Model it ex-VAT first if you are (or expect to be) VAT-registered, then add the correct rate.

Registration is about taxable turnover across a period (threshold £90,000), not whether a single invoice equals £5,000.

Checklist

  • Verify £5,000 is the net (ex-VAT) figure before adding VAT.
  • Pick standard vs reduced vs zero based on the supply, not the amount.
  • Round to the nearest penny on invoices.
  • Do not add 20% again if the figure already includes VAT — use remove mode.
  • Keep the calculation for your records if you are VAT-registered.

FAQ — VAT on £5,000

£1,000.00. The VAT-inclusive total is £6,000.00 (engine estimate, rounded to the nearest penny).

£6,000.00. Formula: net × 1.20 = gross.

£250.00, for a gross of £5,250.00, if the reduced rate applies to your supply.

VAT is £0.00 and the customer total remains £5,000.00. Zero-rated is not the same as exempt — input VAT recovery rules differ.

Divide by 1.20: net ≈ £5,000.00, VAT ≈ £1,000.00. At 20%, VAT is also roughly one-sixth of the gross.

Registration depends on taxable turnover over a rolling period (more than £90,000), not a single invoice of £5,000. One line at £5,000 does not by itself trigger registration.
