The VAT amount and total (or ex-VAT price) above come from the amount, rate, and add/remove mode you enter — not a live Revenue feed. Rates match published Ireland VAT bands on revenue.ie (from 1 January 2026). Below are the formulas, steps, and worked examples from the same engine as the live calculator.

Worked example — add 23%

ModeAdd VAT
Net amount€5,000.00

Gross total€6,150.00

€5,000.00 × 23% = €1,150.00 VAT → €6,150.00 gross

Worked example — remove 23%

Remove 23% VAT — €6,150.00 gross

ModeRemove VAT
Gross (incl. VAT)€6,150.00
Rate23%
Net (ex-VAT)€5,000.00
VAT embedded€1,150.00

€6,150.00 ÷ 1.23 = €5,000.00 net; VAT = €1,150.00

Reduced rate (13.5%)

€100.00 × 13.5% = €13.50 VAT → €113.50 gross

Formulas

  • Add VAT — VAT amount: VAT = Net price × (Rate % ÷ 100)
  • Add VAT — gross total: Gross = Net + VAT
  • Remove VAT — net price: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate % ÷ 100)
  • Remove VAT — VAT embedded: VAT = Gross − Net
  • Rounding: All EUR amounts rounded to the nearest cent (2 decimal places)

Calculation steps

  1. Choose the VAT rate
    Standard 23%, reduced 13.5%, second reduced 9%, livestock 4.8%, zero 0%, or a custom %

Most goods and services use the standard rate. Reduced, second reduced, livestock, and zero rates apply only to qualifying supplies — check Revenue guidance for your product. From 1 July 2026, restaurant/catering food and hairdressing move to the 9% second reduced rate.

  2. Choose add or remove mode
Add: amount is ex-VAT · Remove: amount includes VAT

Add mode prices a shelf/net figure up to a customer total. Remove mode backs VAT out of an invoice or receipt gross.

  3. Add VAT
VAT = Amount × Rate; Gross = Amount + VAT

Multiply the net price by the rate, then add VAT to get the gross.

  4. Remove VAT
    Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate); VAT = Gross − Net

Because Gross = Net × (1 + Rate), divide the VAT-inclusive total by (1 + rate) to isolate the net.

  5. Round to cents
    round(value, 2) — half-up to 2 decimals

Matches typical invoice rounding. Tiny differences can appear if you add then remove on odd amounts.

Adding 23% VAT to €5,000

Start with a net price of €5,000. Multiply by 0.23 to get VAT of €1,150.00, then add for a customer total of €6,150.00.

This is the usual calculation for standard-rated goods and services sold by a VAT-registered business. On an invoice, list net, rate, VAT, and gross separately.

Reduced-rate check at €5,000

If Revenue treats the supply as reduced-rated, VAT drops to €675.00 and the gross is €5,675.00 — €475.00 less than the standard-rated gross.

Reduced rate is not automatic for “cheap” or “essential” items — only qualifying categories under Revenue rules (for example construction, hotel accommodation, and certain fuels).

Second reduced rate (9%) at €5,000

At 9%, VAT is €450.00 and the gross is €5,450.00.

From 1 July 2026, restaurant/catering food and hairdressing use this band when the supply qualifies. Hotel accommodation stays at 13.5%; alcohol and soft drinks with a meal stay at 23%.

Zero-rated vs €5,000 at standard rate

A zero-rated supply at €5,000 net has €0.00 VAT. Compared with standard rate, the customer saves €1,150.00 on this line.

Most basic food, children’s clothing, oral medicines, and books/newspapers are typically zero-rated — check Revenue lists before assuming 0%.

Working backwards from a VAT-inclusive total

If a receipt shows €6,150.00 including 23% VAT, the net is €5,000.00.

Use remove mode whenever the amount you see already includes VAT.

When this amount shows up in real life

€5,000 is a common quote, deposit, or line-item size for freelancers and small traders. Model it ex-VAT first if you are (or expect to be) VAT-registered, then add the correct rate.

Registration is about taxable turnover across a period (services €42,500; goods €85,000), not whether a single invoice equals €5,000.

Checklist

  • Verify €5,000 is the net (ex-VAT) figure before adding VAT.
  • Pick standard vs reduced vs second reduced vs livestock vs zero based on the supply, not the amount.
  • Round to the nearest cent on invoices.
  • Do not add 23% again if the figure already includes VAT — use remove mode.
  • Keep the calculation for your records if you are VAT-registered.

FAQ — VAT on €5,000

€1,150.00. The VAT-inclusive total is €6,150.00, rounded to the nearest cent from our engine.

€6,150.00. Formula: net × 1.23 = gross.

€675.00, for a gross of €5,675.00, if the reduced rate applies to your supply.

€450.00, for a gross of €5,450.00, when the second reduced rate applies (including hospitality/hairdressing from 1 July 2026).

VAT is €0.00 and the customer total remains €5,000.00. Zero-rated is not the same as exempt — input VAT recovery rules differ.

Divide by 1.23: net ≈ €5,000.00, VAT ≈ €1,150.00.

Registration depends on taxable turnover over a period (services from €42,500; goods from €85,000), not a single invoice of €5,000. One line at €5,000 does not by itself trigger registration.
