Dallas has no state income tax and DFW corporate jobs — but the haul from California is 1,400+ miles and Austin gets the headlines. Here's the California → Dallas budget.
You're not asking whether Texas has no state income tax. You probably decided that on the first $2,600 lease renewal notice.
You're asking: If I'm landing in Dallas specifically — not Austin, not Houston — how much cash do I need to get from a California lease to a DFW apartment without blowing up my savings before the first no-income-tax paycheck lands?
That's the question this post answers — and Dallas's answer is often the leanest Texas move-in stack among major metros: ~$3,480 on a one-bedroom in our benchmarks, with corporate HQ density Austin can't match.
*(For a Texas-wide comparison including Austin and Houston, see Moving from California to Texas. For the Austin-specific budget, see Moving from California to Austin.)*
The Short Answer: Plan on $6,500–$14,000 Up Front
California to Dallas is a long-haul interstate move — roughly 1,435 miles from LA and ~1,731 miles from San Francisco.
For a typical renter moving from Los Angeles or the Bay Area to Dallas:
| Budget tier | What's included | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Lean DIY | Rental truck, gas, Dallas deposit + first month, utility hookups | $5,500–$8,000 |
| Standard move | Professional movers (1–2 BR), Dallas move-in, travel, buffer | $7,500–$12,000 |
| Full reset | Full-service movers from SF, lease break, overlap rent, car setup | $12,000–$18,000+ |
Dallas move-in is cheaper than Austin in our benchmarks — and the movers bill is shorter than LA → Nashville or LA → Houston because Dallas sits ~300 miles closer than those Gulf Coast and Music City hauls.
Our LA → Dallas relocation calculator puts direct move costs (movers, travel, setup) around ~$3,800 for a one-bedroom renter — but Dallas first month + deposit adds another ~$3,480 before you're in your own place.
Why Dallas Specifically (Not Just "Texas")
California → Dallas is one of the busiest West Coast → DFW corridors — corporate HQ relocations, remote workers, and "I want Texas tax math without Austin prices" searches all land here.
Versus Austin from California: Austin rents run higher — our benchmarks put a median 1-bedroom at ~$1,700/mo in Austin vs ~$1,600 in Dallas. Move-in cash is ~$4,400 in Austin vs ~$3,480 in Dallas in our model. LA → Dallas is ~1,435 miles vs ~1,370 to Austin — similar distance, but Dallas wins on move-in cash and corporate campus density (Toyota, AT&T, Goldman Sachs DFW).
Versus Houston from California: Houston rents run lower (~$1,400/mo in our benchmarks) but LA → Houston is ~2,003 miles — ~570 miles farther than LA → Dallas, which pushes mover quotes up $500–$1,500 for the same apartment size.
Versus staying in California: Dallas's COL index in our data is 104 vs 166 in Los Angeles and 179 in San Francisco. Median 1-bedroom rent: ~$1,600 in Dallas vs ~$2,400 in LA and ~$3,200 in SF in our move-out benchmarks.
The trade: Dallas is sprawling and car-dependent — unlike parts of LA or SF with transit options. You lose coastal weather; you gain ~$800–$1,600/month in rent headroom vs LA/SF if your salary holds up.
Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Dallas
Distances depend heavily on where you're leaving in California:
| Origin | Miles to Dallas | Drive time (loaded truck) |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | ~1,435 | 20–22 hours; plan 2 nights |
| San Diego | ~1,350 | Similar to LA via I-15/I-40 |
| San Francisco / Bay Area | ~1,731 | 24–26 hours; plan 2–3 nights |
| Sacramento | ~1,680 | Similar to Bay Area |
moveBuddha's LA → Dallas route prices the corridor at ~1,435 miles. SF → Dallas runs ~1,731 miles — roughly 300 miles farther than LA, which pushes mover quotes up.
DIY rental truck
For a studio or one-bedroom on LA → Dallas, moveBuddha's 2026 route data puts rental trucks at roughly $1,133–$2,089, plus fuel. Budget $400–$550 in diesel for a loaded truck on the full LA corridor; $550–$700 from the Bay Area.
Plan 1–2 motel nights from LA ($80–$150/night); 2–3 nights from SF. I-40 through Arizona and New Mexico is long — don't try to hero-drive a loaded 26-footer in one shot.
Moving containers
1-bedroom containers on LA → Dallas: roughly $1,618–$2,994. SF → Dallas containers run $1,920–$3,587 for a studio/1BR. Good middle ground if you won't drive a box truck.
Full-service movers
| Home size | Full-service (LA → Dallas) | Container | Rental truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BR | $2,808–$6,119 | $1,618–$2,994 | $1,133–$2,089 |
| 2–3 BR | $3,728–$7,956 | $2,087–$4,444 | $1,121–$2,436 |
| 4+ BR | $6,422–$12,025 | $3,043–$5,805 | $1,457–$2,915 |
SF → Dallas full-service for a 1-bedroom runs $2,713–$6,353 in moveBuddha's route-specific data — at the long end of California origins.
Peak season (May–September) and end-of-month dates push quotes up. Mid-month moves in fall or winter often run 15–30% cheaper.
Verify every mover at FMCSA's USDOT lookup before you wire a deposit. CA→Texas is a high-volume scam route.
Part 2: Move-In Costs in Dallas
Moving your couch is expensive. Securing a Dallas apartment is where most California transplants feel the relief.
Using our Dallas move-out benchmarks (~$1,600/mo average 1-bedroom):
| Line item | Dallas (1 BR) |
|---|---|
| First month's rent | ~$1,600 |
| Security deposit (1 mo typical) | ~$1,600 |
| Utility setup (electric, internet) | ~$280 |
| Subtotal before movers | ~$3,480 |
Texas has no statutory cap on security deposits (Texas Property Code Chapter 92), but one month's rent is standard in Dallas. Landlords must return deposits within 30 days of move-out with an itemized deduction list.
No broker fee and no last-month-upfront requirement in our Dallas model — unlike San Francisco, where last month's rent upfront adds a full month of cash on move-in planning.
Dallas vs California on move-in cash:
| City | 1 BR rent (benchmark) | Typical move-in (first + deposit + utils) |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas | ~$1,600 | ~$3,480 |
| Austin | ~$1,700 | ~$4,400 |
| Houston | ~$1,400 | ~$3,080 |
| Los Angeles | ~$2,400 | ~$5,080 |
| San Francisco | ~$3,200 | ~$6,680* |
*SF includes last month's rent upfront in our model.

The deposit gap: California landlords must return deposits within 21 days of move-out (Civil Code §1950.5). Since AB 12 (effective July 1, 2024), security deposits are capped at one month's rent — that helps on new leases, but you still face a deposit gap: you pay Dallas before California refunds you.
Part 3: Leaving California
Breaking a lease
Mid-lease departure can trigger full rent liability minus landlord's duty to re-rent (Civil Code §1951.2). Many landlords settle for 1–2 months' rent. On a $2,400 LA one-bedroom, that's $2,400–$4,800. SF at $3,200 hurts more.
Overlap rent
Paying both California and Dallas rent for 2–4 weeks is common when dates don't align. Budget $1,200–$2,400 on a one-bedroom if timing is tight — more if you're overlapping $3,200 SF rent.
Final California bills
Last month's prorated utilities, PG&E or SCE true-up, parking pass cancellation — $150–$500 is normal.
Part 4: Dallas-Specific Costs After You Cross the State Line
You'll need a car
Unlike parts of LA with Metro access or SF with BART, Dallas is a car city for most residents — DART exists but most transplants budget for one:
- Auto payment / cash purchase if you were car-free in California
- Insurance: typically $120–$190/month in Dallas
- Gas and parking: $80–$200/month depending on neighborhood; Uptown and downtown parking adds $100–$250/month
Vehicle registration
Texas requires new residents to register within 30 days (TxDMV). Budget $300–$800 for a typical car including title/registration fees and 6.25% sales tax if applicable.
Summer electricity — budget this on day one
Dallas summers are brutal. First summer in a older apartment? Electric bills can hit $180–$250/month June through September. LA and SF renters don't always expect this line item — ask about average summer utility costs before you sign.
Renters insurance
$15–$22/month nationally for basic coverage — Dallas landlords increasingly require proof at lease signing.
Property taxes (if you buy later)
Dallas County property taxes often run 2.0%–2.5% of assessed value — Texas has no state income tax, but property tax is the long-term gotcha. Renters can ignore this for now; buyers should run numbers before house-hunting in $400k+ median markets.
No IRS moving deduction for civilians
Only active-duty military can deduct moving expenses federally (IRS Topic 455). Employer relocation packages are the main tax-advantaged help — common in corporate HQ relocations to DFW.
Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?
The move costs thousands once. No Texas state income tax + cheaper rent saves you every month — if your salary didn't take a hidden cut.
Our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer, standard deduction; California state tax + 1.3% CA SDI per EDD; Texas has no state wage income tax):
| Gross salary | California take-home | Dallas (TX) take-home | Extra in TX (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | ~$72,794 | ~$79,180 | ~$6,386 |
| $120,000 | ~$84,744 | ~$93,250 | ~$8,506 |
| $140,000 | ~$96,330 | ~$106,956 | ~$10,626 |
On rent: $2,400 LA vs $1,600 Dallas saves ~$800/month (~$9,600/year) in our benchmarks. SF at $3,200 saves ~$1,600/month (~$19,200/year) vs Dallas.
Stack tax + rent and a $7,500–$11,000 move from LA can break even in 6–9 months — if your Dallas salary didn't drop $20k and you're not paying Uptown rents on a Richardson budget while buying a $900/month car stack you didn't have in SF.
The cheat code: remote work paying California rates from Plano or Frisco. That's when the spreadsheet gets interesting — but verify your employer's location policy first.

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill
- Move off-peak — October–March quotes on California→Dallas are consistently lower.
- Leave from LA or San Diego if you can — ~1,435 miles vs ~1,731 from the Bay Area cuts mover quotes meaningfully.
- Look at Richardson, Garland, or Mesquite if commute allows — rent can run $200–$400/month below Uptown or Deep Ellum in many listings.
- Sell heavy furniture in California — hauling a couch 1,400+ miles is expensive; Dallas has IKEA too.
- Time your lease overlap — one avoided month of double rent saves $1,600–$3,200+.
- Negotiate a relocation stipend — even $2,500–$5,000 from an employer changes the math.
- Compare Dallas vs Austin offers — same tax math, but Dallas move-in runs ~$920 less than Austin in our benchmarks. Run LA → Dallas vs LA → Austin side by side.
The Bottom Line
Moving from California to Dallas isn't a weekend road trip and brisket. For most renters from LA or San Diego, $6,500–$11,000 in cash is the honest planning range. From San Francisco, $12,000–$18,000 is realistic once lease break, last-month rent stacks, and Bay Area overlap enter the picture.
Dallas still wins on monthly math for most coastal California transplants: ~$6,400+/year in tax savings at $100k gross, plus ~$800–$1,600/month in rent savings vs LA/SF in our benchmarks. But the move bill is due before those savings arrive — and August electricity will remind you why everyone has a pool friend.
Build the budget first. Compare salaries second. Then decide if Dallas at $110k beats LA at $140k — our relocation calculator exists for exactly that conversation.
