Austin isn't 2015-cheap anymore — but the move still costs thousands before Texas tax savings hit your account. Here's the Austin-specific budget.

Half your LinkedIn feed has already made this move. The other half is still in a California lease doing the math at midnight.

You're not asking whether Texas has no state income tax. You know that part.

You're asking: If I'm specifically landing in Austin — not Dallas, not Houston — how much cash do I need to get there, sign a lease, and not go broke waiting for my California deposit to come back?

That's the question this post answers.

*(For a Texas-wide comparison including Dallas and Houston, see Moving from California to Texas. For ongoing COL after you land, see Texas vs California Cost of Living.)*

The Short Answer: Plan on $6,500–$14,000 Up Front

For a typical renter moving from Los Angeles or San Diego to Austin, a realistic all-in cash budget:

Budget tierWhat's includedTypical total
Lean DIYRental truck, gas, Austin deposit + first month, utility hookups$5,500–$7,500
Standard moveProfessional movers (1–2 BR), Austin move-in, travel, buffer$7,500–$12,000
Full resetFull-service movers from SF/Bay Area, lease break, overlap rent, car setup$12,000–$18,000+

Leaving San Francisco or the Bay Area often costs more on the California side — last month's rent upfront is common, and lease buyouts run higher on $3,200+ one-bedrooms.

Our LA → Austin relocation calculator puts direct move costs (movers, travel, setup) around ~$3,400 for a one-bedroom renter — but Austin first month + deposit adds another ~$3,600 before you sleep in your own place.

✦

Why Austin Specifically (Not Just "Texas")

Austin gets lumped into "move to Texas" content, but it's its own math problem.

Versus Dallas or Houston: Austin rents run higher — our benchmarks put a median 1-bedroom at ~$1,700/mo in Austin vs ~$1,380 in Dallas and ~$1,280 in Houston. Move-in cash is lower in those cities. Austin trades some savings for tech jobs, culture density, and a labor market that still pulls California transplants.

Versus California coast: Austin's COL index in our data is 111 (US avg = 100) vs 166 in Los Angeles and 179 in San Francisco. You're not moving to the cheapest place in Texas. You're moving to a city that's still materially cheaper than California — if your salary didn't get quietly cut.

The 2026 reality: Austin rent grew fast post-2020. The "just move to Austin and live like royalty" era is over. You're saving compared to LA — not compared to 2015 Austin.

✦

Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Austin

California to Austin is roughly 1,250–1,450 miles depending on origin — LA → Austin ~1,370 miles; SF → Austin ~1,740 miles. Industry pricing often bundles the CA–TX corridor at ~1,407 miles (moveBuddha CA→TX route).

DIY rental truck

For a studio or one-bedroom, moveBuddha's 2026 data on the California–Texas corridor shows rental trucks at roughly $1,100–$2,100, plus fuel. Budget $150–$300 in gas for a loaded truck from Southern California; more from the Bay Area.

I-10 through West Texas is long. One motel night ($80–$150) is worth planning if you're driving solo with a full truck.

Moving containers

1-bedroom containers on CA→TX: roughly $1,125–$2,960. Good if you won't drive a box truck but don't want full-service pricing.

Full-service movers

Home sizeFull-service (CA → TX)ContainerRental truck
Studio / 1 BR$1,430–$6,030$1,125–$2,960$1,100–$2,100
2–3 BR$3,490–$7,600$2,200–$4,100$1,150–$2,500
4+ BR$6,100–$10,700$2,700–$5,600$1,450–$2,750

Peak season (May–September) and end-of-month dates push quotes up. Mid-month moves in fall or winter often run 15–30% cheaper.

Verify every mover at FMCSA's USDOT lookup before you wire a deposit. CA→Austin is a high-volume scam route.

✦

Part 2: Move-In Costs in Austin

This is where California transplants feel the relief — or don't, if they picked a premium zip code.

Using our Austin move-out benchmarks (~$1,700/mo average 1-bedroom):

Line itemAustin (1 BR)
First month's rent~$1,700
Security deposit (1 mo typical)~$1,700
Utility setup (electric, internet)~$280
Subtotal before movers~$4,400

Texas has no statutory cap on security deposits (Texas Property Code Chapter 92), but one month's rent is standard in Austin. Landlords must return deposits within 30 days of move-out with an itemized deduction list.

Austin vs other Texas cities on move-in cash:

City1 BR rent (benchmark)Typical move-in (first + deposit + utils)
Austin~$1,700~$4,400
Dallas~$1,380~$3,560
Houston~$1,280~$3,360

No broker fee and no last-month-upfront requirement in our Austin model — unlike San Francisco, where last month's rent upfront adds a full month of cash on move-in and on move-out planning.

✦

Part 3: Leaving California

Security deposit timing

California landlords must return deposits within 21 days of move-out with an itemized statement (Civil Code §1950.5). Since AB 12 (effective July 1, 2024), security deposits are capped at one month's rent — that helps on new leases, but you still face a deposit gap: you pay Austin before California refunds you.

Breaking a lease

Mid-lease departure can trigger full rent liability minus landlord's duty to re-rent (Civil Code §1951.2). Many landlords settle for 1–2 months' rent. On a $2,400 LA one-bedroom, that's $2,400–$4,800. SF at $3,200 hurts more.

Overlap rent

Paying both California and Austin rent for 2–4 weeks is common when dates don't align. Budget $1,200–$2,500 on a one-bedroom — more if you're overlapping SF rent.

✦

Part 4: Austin-Specific Costs After You Land

You'll need a car

Unlike SF or much of NYC, Austin is a car city for most residents. Budget:

  • Auto payment / cash purchase if you didn't have a car in California
  • Insurance: typically $120–$200/month in Austin — less than Miami, more than you paid if you were car-free in SF
  • Gas and parking: varies by neighborhood; downtown parking adds $100–$250/month

Vehicle registration

Texas requires new residents to register within 30 days (TxDMV). Budget $300–$800 for a typical car including title/registration fees and 6.25% sales tax if applicable.

Renters insurance

$15–$22/month nationally for basic coverage — Austin landlords increasingly require proof at lease signing. Budget it from day one.

If you're buying in Austin later

Travis County property taxes are the long-term gotcha — Texas has no state income tax, but property tax rates often run 2%+ of assessed value. That's a different post-move spreadsheet. Renters can ignore this for now; buyers should read the Texas vs California property tax section before house-hunting.

No IRS moving deduction for civilians

Only active-duty military can deduct moving expenses federally (IRS Topic 455). Employer relocation packages are the main tax-advantaged help.

✦

Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?

The move is a one-time bill. No California state income tax in Texas is a monthly deposit to your net pay — if your gross salary holds up.

Our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer, standard deduction; California state tax + 1.3% CA SDI per EDD; Texas has no state wage income tax):

Gross salaryCalifornia take-homeTexas (Austin) take-homeExtra in TX (annual)
$100,000~$72,794~$79,180~$6,386
$120,000~$84,744~$93,250~$8,506
$140,000~$96,330~$106,956~$10,626

On rent: $2,400 LA vs $1,700 Austin saves ~$700/month (~$8,400/year) in our benchmarks. SF at $3,200 saves ~$1,500/month (~$18,000/year) vs Austin.

A $8,000–$10,000 move from LA can break even in 6–10 months from tax + rent — if your Austin offer didn't drop $20k and you're not paying South Congress rents on a Round Rock budget.

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill

  1. Move off-peak — October–March quotes on CA→Austin are consistently lower.
  2. Look at Round Rock, Pflugerville, or Cedar Park if commute allows — rent can run $200–$400/month below central Austin in many listings.
  3. Sell heavy furniture before you leave California — IKEA in Austin exists for a reason.
  4. Avoid one month of overlap rent — that's $1,700+ in Austin alone.
  5. Negotiate relocation — even $3,000–$5,000 from an employer changes the math.
  6. Verify the salary — Austin tech pays well, but a $15k–$20k gross cut from SF can erase the tax win. Run both numbers before you sign.
✦

The Bottom Line

Moving from California to Austin isn't a $500 U-Haul and breakfast tacos. For most renters from LA or San Diego, plan $6,500–$12,000 in cash. From San Francisco, $10,000–$18,000 is realistic once lease break and overlap enter the picture.

Austin still wins on monthly math for most coastal California transplants: ~$6,400+/year in tax savings at $100k gross, plus ~$700–$1,500/month in rent savings vs LA/SF in our benchmarks. But the move bill is due before those savings arrive.

Build the budget first. Compare offers second. Then decide if Austin at $110k beats LA at $140k — that's what the relocation calculator is for.
