How Much Does It Cost to Move from California to Texas? (2026 Budget)

Professional movers, Texas deposits, lease break fees, and the deposit gap — the real cash you need before CA tax savings kick in. LA to Austin budgets from $6,600 to $16,000+ with 2026 numbers.

The move itself costs thousands before Texas saves you a dime on rent or taxes. Here's the full budget — not the TikTok version.

You're not asking whether Texas is cheaper than California. You probably already know the answer to that, or you wouldn't be reading this.

You're asking something more practical: How much cash do I actually need to get from a California apartment to a Texas one without blowing up my credit card?

That's a different question — and it's the one that catches people off guard. The state income tax savings don't hit your bank account until you've been working in Texas for a few paychecks. The moving truck invoice is due now.

Let's build the real budget.

✦

The Short Answer: Plan on $7,000–$15,000 Up Front

For a typical renter moving from Los Angeles to Austin (or a similar California metro to a major Texas city), a realistic all-in cash budget looks like this:

Budget tierWhat's includedTypical total
Lean DIYRental truck, gas, one Texas deposit + first month, utility hookups$5,500–$8,000
Standard moveProfessional movers (1–2 BR), Texas move-in costs, travel, small buffer$8,000–$12,000
Full resetFull-service movers, furniture, overlap rent, vehicle registration, 1-month cushion$12,000–$18,000+

Those ranges assume you're renting in Texas. Buying changes the math entirely — closing costs and property taxes are a different spreadsheet. If you're house-hunting, start with our Texas vs California cost of living guide before you price the move.

Our relocation salary calculator estimates ~$3,400 in direct move-related costs for LA → Austin (movers, travel, utility setup) when you're renting a one-bedroom — but that doesn't include your first month of Texas rent and deposit, which is where most of the cash actually goes.

✦

Part 1: Getting Your Stuff There

California and Texas are about 1,300–1,750 miles apart, depending on whether you're leaving LA, San Diego, the Bay Area, or Sacramento. moveBuddha tracks this as a ~1,407-mile route for pricing purposes.

DIY rental truck

Cheapest option. You load, you drive, you unload.

For a studio or one-bedroom on the California–Texas corridor, moveBuddha's May 2026 quote data puts rental trucks at roughly $1,100–$2,100, plus fuel. A 2–3 bedroom DIY run is more like $1,150–$2,500.

Real talk: I-10 through West Texas is long, hot, and boring. Budget an extra night in a motel if you're driving a loaded truck — that's another $80–$150.

Moving containers (PODS, U-Pack, etc.)

You pack; they haul. For a 1-bedroom, containers typically land $1,600–$3,000 on this route. For 2–3 bedrooms, $2,000–$4,100. Good middle ground if you hate driving a 26-foot box but don't want full white-glove service.

Full-service professional movers

This is what most people actually use for a cross-country move — and it's the biggest line item.

Industry quote aggregators (moveBuddha, GoodMigrations) show these 2026 ranges for California → Texas:

Home sizeFull-service moversMoving containerRental truck
Studio / 1 BR$1,400–$6,000$1,100–$3,000$1,100–$2,100
2–3 BR$3,500–$7,600$2,200–$4,100$1,150–$2,500
4+ BR$6,100–$10,700$2,700–$5,600$1,450–$2,750

Peak season (May–September) and end-of-month dates push quotes toward the high end. Moving mid-month in October or February can shave 15–30% off professional quotes — that's not a myth, it's how truck capacity pricing works.

One thing you must do: verify your mover is a licensed interstate carrier. The FMCSA requires interstate movers to hold a USDOT number and active operating authority. Look up any company at FMCSA's mover search before you sign. Broker scams on popular routes like CA → TX are real.

Our relocation engine uses a ~$3,200 baseline for long-distance professional moving (different state) as a planning number — right in the middle of the 1–2 bedroom full-service range.

✦

Part 2: Move-In Costs in Texas (Where the Cash Actually Goes)

Moving your couch is expensive. Securing a Texas apartment is where most people run out of money.

Using our relocation housing benchmarks (median 1-bedroom rents: ~$2,450/mo in LA, ~$1,620/mo in Austin, ~$1,380/mo in Dallas, ~$1,280/mo in Houston), here's what move-in typically requires:

Line itemAustin (1 BR)Dallas (1 BR)Houston (1 BR)
First month's rent~$1,620~$1,380~$1,280
Security deposit (1 mo typical)~$1,620~$1,380~$1,280
Utility setup (electric, gas, internet)~$280~$280~$280
Subtotal before movers~$3,520~$3,040~$2,840

Texas has no statutory cap on security deposits (Texas Property Code Chapter 92), but one month's rent is standard. Landlords must return your deposit within 30 days after move-out, with an itemized deduction list if they keep anything.

California is different now. Since July 1, 2024, California AB 12 caps security deposits at one month's rent for both furnished and unfurnished units. That's actually helpful when you're leaving California — your old deposit might be smaller than you remember if you signed recently.

Use our city-specific tools to nail your numbers:

Good news on deposits: Texas rent is lower, so your new deposit is often $800–$1,200 less than what you tied up in California. You won't get your California deposit back until after move-out (California landlords have 21 days to return it under Civil Code §1950.5), so plan for a deposit gap — you'll pay Texas before California refunds you.

✦

Part 3: Leaving California (The Costs Nobody Posts About)

Breaking a lease early

If you're mid-lease in California, your landlord can charge for the remainder — minus their duty to re-rent (Civil Code §1951.2). In practice, many landlords negotiate a 1–2 month rent buyout. On a $2,450 LA one-bedroom, that's $2,450–$4,900 out of pocket.

If your lease is month-to-month, you generally need 30 days' written notice (Civil Code §1946). Time your Texas lease start accordingly.

Overlap rent

The classic mistake: paying both California and Texas rent for 2–4 weeks because move-out and move-in didn't line up. Budget $1,200–$2,500 for overlap on a one-bedroom if timing is tight.

Final California bills

Last month's prorated utilities, a final PG&E true-up, parking pass cancellation, storage unit you forgot about — $200–$600 is normal.

✦

Part 4: Hidden Line Items After You Cross the State Line

Vehicle registration and driver's license

Texas requires new residents to register vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency (TxDMV). You'll pay:

  • Texas title transfer / registration: roughly $50–$75 base fees plus 6.25% sales tax on the vehicle's value (if not already paid in Texas)
  • New Texas driver's license: about $33 (Texas DPS fee schedule)
  • California registration refund: partial if you paid annually — don't count on it being fast

Budget $300–$800 for a typical car, more for newer or higher-value vehicles.

Insurance changes

Texas auto and renter's insurance rates differ from California — sometimes lower, sometimes not (hail and wind in North Texas are real). Get quotes before you move, not after. A $30–$80/month swing is common.

Homeowner's insurance in Texas runs higher than the national average in many counties due to weather risk — factor that in if you're buying.

No IRS moving deduction (for most people)

Since the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, only active-duty military (and certain intelligence community employees) can deduct moving expenses on federal returns. The IRS confirms this in Topic 455. Your employer relocation package — if you have one — is the only tax-advantaged help most civilians get.

✦

Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?

The move costs thousands once. Texas saves you every month after that — if your salary didn't take a hidden cut.

Run the same gross through our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer, standard deduction, California state tax + 1.3% CA SDI per EDD payroll tax rates; Texas has no state wage income tax per the Texas Comptroller):

Gross salaryCalifornia take-homeTexas take-homeExtra in TX (annual)
$100,000~$72,794~$79,180~$6,386
$120,000~$84,744~$93,250~$8,506
$140,000~$96,330~$106,956~$10,626

That's $530–$885/month in tax savings alone — before cheaper rent kicks in.

On housing: a $2,450 LA one-bedroom vs $1,620 Austin saves ~$830/month (~$9,960/year). Stack tax + rent and a $10,000–$12,000 move can break even in 6–12 months — if your Texas salary didn't drop and you're not paying Austin downtown rents on a Houston budget.

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill

  1. Move off-peak. October–March quotes are consistently lower on the CA–TX corridor.
  2. Sell heavy furniture in California. Replacing a couch in Texas is sometimes cheaper than hauling it 1,400 miles.
  3. Time your lease overlap. Even one avoided month of double rent saves $1,200–$2,500.
  4. Negotiate a relocation stipend. Even $3,000–$5,000 from an employer changes the math — ask before you accept the offer.
  5. Don't skip the salary check. A Texas offer $15k below your California gross can erase the tax win. Run both numbers in our California paycheck calculator and Texas paycheck calculator side by side.
✦

The Bottom Line

Moving from California to Texas isn't a $500 U-Haul and a dream. For most renters, $7,000–$15,000 in cash is the honest planning range — movers, Texas move-in costs, vehicle paperwork, and a buffer for the deposit gap and overlap rent.

The move can pay for itself within a year through state tax savings (~$6,400+/year at $100k gross) and lower rent (~$800+/month LA vs Austin on a one-bedroom in our benchmarks). But those savings are monthly. The moving bill is due upfront.

Build the budget first. Then compare salaries. Then decide if Austin at $110k beats LA at $140k — our relocation salary calculator exists for exactly that conversation.
