The Rockies sit between cheap Calgary rent and Vancouver's seawall prices. Here's the real CAD budget when you're moving west for the coast — not the spreadsheet.
You're not asking whether Vancouver gets more rain than Calgary chinooks. You probably decided that when a tech offer landed, you're done with +30 January, or you want mountains and ocean in the same weekend without a flight.
You're asking something more practical: How much cash do you actually need to get from a Calgary lease to a Vancouver apartment before the first BC paycheck lands?
That's a different question. Vancouver costs more every month in our benchmarks — and the movers bill over the Rockies plus your BC deposit are due now, often before Alberta returns your security deposit.
Let's build the real budget.

The Short Answer: Plan on $4,500–$10,000 CAD Up Front
Calgary to Vancouver is ~971 km (~603 miles) through the Rockies on the Trans-Canada — a regional long-haul, not cross-country, but not a Sunday drive either.
For a typical renter moving from Calgary to Vancouver:
| Budget tier | What's included | Typical total (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Lean DIY | Rental truck, gas, Vancouver deposit + first month, utility hookups | $3,500–$5,500 |
| Standard move | Professional movers (1–2 BR), Vancouver move-in, travel, buffer | $5,000–$8,500 |
| Full reset | Full-service movers, lease break, overlap rent, vehicle setup | $7,000–$12,000+ |
Those ranges assume you're renting. Vancouver buying is a different tax and mortgage conversation.
Our Calgary → Vancouver relocation calculator rolls up salary, COL, and tax. Province view: Alberta → British Columbia.
Why Vancouver (And What You're Giving Up)
Calgary → Vancouver is a busy Alberta → BC corridor — tech, film, healthcare, and lifestyle moves that trade Prairie affordability for coastal access.
Versus staying in Calgary: Calgary's COL index in our data is 92 vs 125 in Vancouver — a 33-point gap. Median 1-bedroom rent: ~$1,500 in Calgary vs ~$2,600 in Vancouver. That's ~$1,100/month more after you land.
Versus Calgary → Edmonton: Vancouver is longer and pricier — you're not moving for rent relief. You're moving for labour market, climate, and geography.
Tax: British Columbia take-home runs slightly ahead of Alberta at the same gross in our engine — roughly $450–$1,050/year at $100k–$140k. That does not offset the rent gap.
The trade: Calgary is car-dependent for most commuters; Vancouver can be transit-friendly downtown on SkyTrain (~$100/mo in our transport data) but North Shore and suburbs still mean a car for many. You also go from 5% GST to GST + PST (~12%) on most goods.
Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Vancouver
Calgary to Vancouver via AB → BC through the Rockies is roughly 971 km — 12–14 hours in a loaded truck; plan 1–2 nights if driving solo.
| Route detail | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~971 km (~603 mi) |
| Drive time (loaded truck) | 12–14 hours; plan 1–2 nights |
| Peak season | May–August, long weekends |
| Winter risk | Rogers Pass / Kicking Horse — chains, delays, or hire pros Nov–Mar |
DIY rental truck
For a studio or one-bedroom, rental trucks on Calgary → Vancouver typically run $800–$1,800 CAD, plus fuel. Budget $350–$550 CAD in diesel.
One motel night ($100–$160) is often enough; plan two if you're cautious in winter.
Moving containers
1-bedroom containers: roughly $1,500–$2,800 CAD.
Full-service movers
| Home size | Full-service (Calgary → Vancouver) | Container | Rental truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BR | $2,500–$5,000 | $1,500–$2,800 | $800–$1,800 |
| 2–3 BR | $3,500–$6,500 | $2,200–$4,000 | $1,000–$2,200 |
| 4+ BR | $5,500–$9,500+ | $3,000–$5,500 | $1,400–$2,600 |
Get quotes from CAM-certified movers (Canadian Association of Movers). Winter Rockies crossings are when pro movers earn their fee.
Part 2: Move-In Costs in Vancouver (Where the Gap Widens)
Hauling over the Rockies is expensive. Securing a Vancouver lease is where Calgary transplants feel the monthly hit.
Using our relocation housing benchmarks:
| Line item | Vancouver (1 BR) | Calgary (1 BR) |
|---|---|---|
| First month's rent | ~$2,600 | ~$1,500 |
| Security deposit (½ mo BC typical) | ~$1,300 | — |
| Security / damage deposit (1 mo AB) | — | ~$1,500 |
| Utility setup (electric, internet) | ~$280 | ~$280 |
| Subtotal before movers | ~$4,180 | ~$3,280 |
Alberta allows a security deposit up to one month's rent; return within 10 days of move-out (Alberta RTA). Calgary move-in was first + deposit — ~$3,280 in our benchmarks.
British Columbia caps security deposits at half of one month's rent (BC RTA). Vancouver move-in is ~$4,180 — ~$900 more upfront than Calgary even before the $1,100/month rent jump.
City tools:
The deposit gap: You fund Vancouver before Alberta refunds your $1,500 deposit — weeks of tied-up cash.
Part 3: Leaving Calgary (The Costs Nobody Posts About)
Breaking an Alberta lease early
Alberta tenants who leave early can owe rent until the unit is re-rented — the landlord must mitigate. Many Calgary landlords negotiate a 1–2 month rent buyout. On a $1,500 one-bedroom, that's $1,500–$3,000 CAD.
Give proper notice per your lease — often one month on periodic tenancies (Alberta RTA).
Overlap rent
Paying both Calgary and Vancouver for 2–4 weeks is common. Budget $750–$2,600 CAD for overlap on a one-bedroom — Vancouver's share dominates.
Final Calgary bills
Enmax true-up, parking stall, utility close-out — $100–$300 CAD is normal.
Part 4: Vancouver-Specific Costs After You Cross the Rockies
SkyTrain vs a car
Downtown, Olympic Village, and Metrotown can work on TransLink. North Vancouver, Burnaby east, and Surrey often need a car.
- TransLink monthly pass: ~$100/month in our transport data
- Car stack: insurance $180–$300/month, parking $75–$250/month, gas $100–$180/month
Vehicle registration
New BC residents must switch licence and registration with ICBC when they become residents (BC — moving to BC). Budget $300–$700 CAD for a typical vehicle.
GST + PST vs Alberta GST
BC ~12% combined vs Alberta 5% GST — roughly $210 more tax on $3,000 of furnishings.
Rain, heating, insurance
Mild wet winters; budget $80–$150/month utilities shoulder season. Renters insurance with water coverage: $25–$45/month.
CRA moving deduction
Check CRA Line 21900 — most employees need the 40+ km closer to work test.
Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?
Honest answer: not on rent at the same gross.
| Gross salary (CAD) | Calgary (AB) take-home | Vancouver (BC) take-home | BC edge (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | ~$72,883 | ~$73,935 | ~$1,050 |
| $120,000 | ~$86,621 | ~$87,515 | ~$900 |
| $140,000 | ~$99,421 | ~$99,857 | ~$440 |
Rent: $2,600 Vancouver vs $1,500 Calgary costs ~$1,100/month more (~$13,200/year).
BC's small take-home edge does not close the rent gap. You need a higher gross offer or a non-financial reason.
COL equivalence: Calgary $92k gross roughly maps to ~$125k in Vancouver for the same comfortable band (92 × salary / 125 inverted: need ~36% more gross in Vancouver for the same COL band).
Run your offer: Calgary → Vancouver.
Paychecks: Alberta calculator vs British Columbia calculator.

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill
- Move off-peak — fall and winter quotes are often lower (but watch mountain weather).
- Look at New Westminster, Burnaby, or Coquitlam — $200–$400/month below core Vancouver in many listings.
- Sell heavy furniture in Calgary — replacing after the Rockies haul is often cheaper.
- Time lease overlap — one avoided month saves $1,500–$2,600+.
- Negotiate relocation stipend — $3,000–$5,000 CAD is reasonable for interprovincial transfers.
- Run the salary check — same $100k gross is a lifestyle step down in Vancouver. Use the relocation calculator.
- Winter-proof the route — budget an extra day or hire pros for Kicking Horse in January.
The Bottom Line
Moving from Calgary to Vancouver is a Rockies haul, not a cross-country odyssey — but Vancouver's monthly costs are much higher. For most renters, $4,500–$10,000 CAD upfront is the honest range.
Vancouver does not win on rent at the same gross — it wins when you want the coast and your offer reflects BC's COL. Build the budget first, compare salaries second.
