How Much Does It Cost to Move from Vancouver to Alberta? (2026 Budget)

Vancouver to Edmonton and Calgary movers, Alberta deposits, BC lease break fees, and the deposit gap — the real CAD you need before rent savings kick in. Budgets from $5,360 to $13,880+ with 2026 numbers.

Edmonton and Calgary rent is half Vancouver's. The Rockies haul is shorter than Toronto — but the deposit gap and movers bill are still real. Here's the full BC → Alberta budget.

You're not asking whether Alberta gets more winter sun than Vancouver. You probably decided that when your lease renewal quoted $2,800 for a one-bedroom nowhere near the seawall.

You're asking something more practical: How much cash do you actually need to get from a Vancouver lease to an Alberta apartment — Calgary, Edmonton, or the suburbs — without draining savings before the first paycheck lands?

That's a different question. Rent savings hit your account monthly — but the movers invoice and your Alberta deposit are due now, often before BC returns your security deposit.

Let's build the real budget — both major Alberta landings, not just one skyline.

*(For Toronto → Calgary context, see Moving from Toronto to Calgary. For ongoing Vancouver COL, see our Vancouver comfortable salary guide.)*

✦

The Short Answer: Plan on $4,500–$10,000 CAD Up Front

Vancouver to Alberta is a regional long-haul — ~971 km to Calgary and ~1,159 km to Edmonton on the Trans-Canada — shorter and cheaper than Vancouver → Toronto or Toronto → Calgary.

For a typical renter moving from Vancouver to Edmonton or Calgary:

Budget tierWhat's includedTypical total (CAD)
Lean DIYRental truck, gas, Alberta deposit + first month, utility hookups$3,500–$5,500
Standard moveProfessional movers (1–2 BR), Alberta move-in, travel, buffer$5,000–$8,500
Full resetFull-service movers, lease break, overlap rent, vehicle setup$7,000–$12,000+

Those ranges assume you're renting. Buying opens lower Alberta prices vs Vancouver — but land transfer and moving costs still bite.

Our relocation salary calculator — British Columbia → Alberta (state) translates salary and COL at the province level. City pairs: Vancouver → Edmonton, Vancouver → Calgary.

✦

Why Alberta (Edmonton vs Calgary)

Vancouver → Alberta is one of the busiest BC → Prairie corridors — energy sector rotations, remote workers, and "I'm done with West End rent" searches land in both cities.

City1 BR rent (benchmark)Typical move-in (first + deposit + utils)Miles from Vancouver
Edmonton~$1,150~$2,580~1,159 km
Calgary~$1,500~$3,280~971 km

Edmonton is the cheapest landing in our benchmarks — ~$1,150 one-bedroom and COL index 88. Calgary runs ~$1,500 with more finance, tech, and corporate HQ density (COL 92).

Versus staying in Vancouver: Vancouver's COL index is 125 vs 88 in Edmonton and 92 in Calgary. Median 1-bedroom rent: ~$2,600 in Vancouver vs ~$1,150 in Edmonton and ~$1,500 in Calgary. That's ~$1,100–$1,450/month in rent relief — the main spreadsheet win.

Tax surprise: At $100k–$140k CAD gross, our engine shows British Columbia take-home slightly ahead of Alberta — not behind. This move is about rent and purchase prices, not a provincial tax jackpot. GST (5%) in Alberta vs GST + PST (12%) on many goods in BC still helps at checkout.

The trade: Both Alberta cities are car cities for most commuters. Vancouver's TransLink (~$100/mo monthly pass in our transport data) can disappear from your budget — replaced by $600–$900/month in car costs if you were transit-dependent downtown.

✦

Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Alberta

Distances from Vancouver via BC → AB through the Rockies:

DestinationDistanceDrive time (loaded truck)
Calgary~971 km (~603 mi)12–14 hours; plan 1–2 nights
Edmonton~1,159 km (~720 mi)14–16 hours; plan 2 nights

Winter moves (November–March) add Rogers Pass / Kicking Horse weather risk — budget extra days, chains, or a container instead of a heroic DIY run.

DIY rental truck

For a studio or one-bedroom, rental trucks on Vancouver → Alberta typically run $800–$1,800 CAD, plus fuel. Budget $350–$550 CAD in diesel to Calgary; $450–$650 to Edmonton.

One motel night ($100–$160) is often enough for Calgary; plan two for Edmonton if driving solo.

Moving containers

1-bedroom containers: roughly $1,500–$2,800 CAD on Vancouver → Alberta. Good middle ground if you won't drive a box truck over the Rockies.

Full-service movers

Home sizeFull-service (Vancouver → AB)ContainerRental truck
Studio / 1 BR$2,500–$5,000$1,500–$2,800$800–$1,800
2–3 BR$3,500–$6,500$2,200–$4,000$1,000–$2,200
4+ BR$5,500–$9,500+$3,000–$5,500$1,400–$2,600

Calgary quotes are often 10–15% lower than Edmonton on the same home size because of distance.

Get quotes from CAM-certified movers (Canadian Association of Movers) and verify insurance before you sign.

✦

Part 2: Move-In Costs in Alberta (Where the Cash Actually Goes)

Hauling furniture over the Rockies is expensive. Securing an Alberta apartment is where Vancouver transplants feel the relief — if you pick Edmonton or suburban Calgary honestly.

Using our relocation housing benchmarks:

Line itemEdmonton (1 BR)Calgary (1 BR)Vancouver (1 BR)
First month's rent~$1,150~$1,500~$2,600
Security deposit (1 mo AB / ½ mo BC typical)~$1,150~$1,500~$1,300
Utility setup (electric, internet)~$280~$280~$280
Subtotal before movers~$2,580~$3,280~$4,180

British Columbia caps security deposits at half of one month's rent (plus separate pet damage deposit if applicable) and requires return within 15 days with an inspection report (Residential Tenancy Act).

Alberta allows a security deposit up to one month's rent; landlords must return it within 10 days of move-out (Alberta RTA).

City tools:

The deposit gap: You fund Alberta before BC refunds your deposit. On a $1,300 Vancouver half-month deposit, that's still weeks of tied-up cash — plus $2,580–$3,280 due on the Alberta side.

✦

Part 3: Leaving Vancouver (The Costs Nobody Posts About)

Breaking a lease early

BC tenants who leave early owe rent until the unit is re-rented — the landlord must mitigate. In practice, many Vancouver landlords negotiate a 1–2 month rent buyout. On a $2,600 one-bedroom, that's $2,600–$5,200 CAD out of pocket.

Month-to-month tenancies generally require one month's notice (RTA). Time your Alberta lease start accordingly.

Overlap rent

Paying both Vancouver and Alberta rent for 2–4 weeks is common. Budget $1,300–$2,600 CAD for overlap on a one-bedroom — painful at Vancouver rents even when Alberta overlap is cheap.

Final Vancouver bills

Last month's prorated utilities, BC Hydro true-up, TransLink pass cancellation — $150–$400 CAD is normal.

✦

Part 4: Alberta Costs After You Cross the Rockies

Car stack (budget honestly)

  • Insurance: $150–$250/month in Edmonton or Calgary
  • Parking: $50–$200/month depending on building
  • Gas: $120–$200/month for typical commuting

If you were car-free on SkyTrain, price $600–$900/month all-in before you celebrate Edmonton rent.

Vehicle registration

New Alberta residents must switch licence and registration within 90 days (Alberta.ca — Move to Alberta). Budget $300–$600 CAD for a typical vehicle.

GST vs BC sales tax

Alberta charges 5% GST only. BC charges 5% GST + 7% PST (12% combined) on most goods and services. Furnishing a new apartment saves real money in Alberta — ~$210 less tax on $3,000 of purchases.

Winter heating

Edmonton and Calgary winters are cold. Budget $120–$220/month peak for gas and electricity — different from Vancouver's milder coastal winters, but furnace season is real.

Renters insurance

$20–$35/month — landlords increasingly require proof at lease signing.

CRA moving expenses

Most employees only deduct moving costs if they meet CRA Line 21900 rules — generally 40+ km closer to work. Don't assume the haul is deductible.

✦

Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?

The move costs thousands once. Lower Alberta rent saves you every month — if your salary didn't take a hidden cut.

Our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer; BC federal + provincial; Alberta federal + provincial):

Gross salary (CAD)Vancouver (BC) take-homeAlberta (AB) take-homeDifference
$100,000~$73,935~$72,883BC ~$1,050 ahead
$120,000~$87,515~$86,621BC ~$890 ahead
$140,000~$99,857~$99,421BC ~$440 ahead

Tax is not the win here. Rent is.

On housing: $2,600 Vancouver vs $1,150 Edmonton saves ~$1,450/month (~$17,400/year). $2,600 vs $1,500 Calgary saves ~$1,100/month (~$13,200/year).

Stack rent savings and a $5,000–$7,000 CAD move to Edmonton can break even in 4–7 months — if your Alberta salary didn't drop $20k and you're not paying downtown Calgary rent on a Leduc budget.

COL equivalence: Vancouver $125k gross roughly maps to ~$88k in Edmonton or ~$92k in Calgary for the same comfortable band in our model.

Run your offer: Vancouver → Edmonton, Vancouver → Calgary, or BC → Alberta (state).

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill

  1. Move off-peak. October–April quotes are often lower — avoid month-end and long weekends.
  1. Pick Edmonton over Calgary if your job allows — move-in cash drops ~$700 on a one-bedroom in our benchmarks; movers quote less on distance too.
  1. Look at Sherwood Park, St. Albert, or Airdrie if commute allows — rent can run $150–$350/month below core city listings.
  1. Sell heavy furniture in Vancouver. Replacing it after the Rockies haul is often cheaper than moving it.
  1. Time your lease overlap. One avoided month saves $1,150–$2,600+.
  1. Negotiate a relocation stipend. Even $2,500–$5,000 CAD changes the math.
  1. Don't assume Alberta tax saves you money — run the paycheck comparison. At $100k–$140k, BC can edge Alberta on take-home in our engine. Rent carries the move.
  1. Price the car if you're leaving SkyTrain life — transit savings don't transfer automatically.
✦

The Bottom Line

Moving from Vancouver to Alberta is shorter and often cheaper upfront than cross-country exits from Ontario — but it's still a four-figure move plus a deposit gap.

For most renters to Edmonton, $4,500–$8,000 CAD is the honest planning range. Calgary runs $5,000–$10,000 once movers and Vancouver lease break enter the picture.

Alberta wins on monthly math for most Vancouver transplants through rent: ~$1,100–$1,450/month savings on a one-bedroom in our benchmarks — $13,200–$17,400/year — not through provincial tax. The moving bill is due before those savings arrive.

Build the budget first. Compare salaries second. Then decide if Edmonton at $90k beats Vancouver at $125k — our Vancouver → Edmonton relocation calculator exists for exactly that conversation.
