Vegas is the shortest major exit from Southern California — and Nevada doesn't tax your paycheck. But the deposit gap and July electricity still cost real money. Here's the Las Vegas-specific budget.
You've done the drive. Maybe a hundred times. I-15 from LA to Vegas is 270 miles — four hours in a car, a long afternoon in a U-Haul.
That's why this corridor moves ~53,000 people per year from California to Nevada. It's not a fantasy relocation. It's a weekend trip that became permanent.
You're not asking whether Nevada has no state income tax. You know that part.
You're asking: If I'm landing in Las Vegas — not Reno, not Henderson as a legal fiction while you actually live there — how much cash do I need to sign a lease and survive until California sends my deposit back?
That's what this post covers.
*(For the full state-wide budget (Las Vegas, Reno, and more), see Moving from California to Nevada. For ongoing COL after you land, see our Las Vegas comfortable salary guide. The Short Answer: Plan on $4,500–$10,000 Up Front
California to Las Vegas is the cheapest major interstate move out of Southern California — shorter than Phoenix, half the distance of Texas.
For a typical renter moving from Los Angeles or San Diego to Las Vegas:
| Budget tier | What's included | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Lean DIY | Rental truck, gas, Vegas deposit + first month, utility hookups | $4,000–$5,500 |
| Standard move | Professional movers (1–2 BR), Vegas move-in, travel, buffer | $5,500–$9,000 |
| Full reset | Full-service movers from SF/Bay Area, lease break, overlap rent, car setup | $9,000–$14,000+ |
Our LA → Las Vegas relocation calculator puts direct move costs (movers, travel, setup) around ~$2,000–$2,400 for a one-bedroom renter — but Vegas first month + deposit adds another ~$3,100 before you're in your own place.
Why Las Vegas Specifically (Not Just "Nevada")
Versus Reno: Reno is closer to Northern California and has a different job market. Most California transplants on this search mean Clark County — Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin, North Las Vegas.
Versus Phoenix: Phoenix and Vegas compete for the same "leave California" search. Vegas adds zero state income tax (Arizona charges 2.5% flat). Phoenix often wins on job diversity and slightly lower summer humidity. Vegas wins on take-home pay and distance from LA — 270 miles vs ~371.
Versus Texas: Both have no state wage income tax. Texas has more corporate HQs; Vegas has hospitality, logistics, and a growing tech footprint. Move-in cash is lower in Vegas in our benchmarks (~$1,400/mo 1BR vs ~$1,700 in Austin).
Versus California coast: Vegas COL index in our data is 103 vs 166 in Los Angeles and 179 in San Francisco. Median 1-bedroom rent: ~$1,400 in Las Vegas vs ~$2,400 in LA and ~$3,200 in SF.
Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Las Vegas
Distances depend on where you're leaving in California:
| Origin | Miles to Las Vegas | Drive time (loaded truck) |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | ~270 | One afternoon |
| San Diego | ~330 | One long day |
| San Francisco / Bay Area | ~570 | 9–10 hours; plan a stop |
| Sacramento | ~450 | 7–8 hours |
moveBuddha's CA→NV corridor prices the route at ~397 miles on average for interstate quotes. LA → Vegas at ~270 miles is the highest-volume segment — carriers run it daily.
DIY rental truck
For a studio or one-bedroom on the California–Nevada corridor, moveBuddha's 2026 data puts rental trucks at roughly $440–$808, plus fuel. LA → Vegas is short enough that many people finish in one day without a motel — one of the few California exits where that's realistic with a loaded truck.
Budget $60–$120 in gas from LA; $120–$200 from the Bay Area.
Moving containers
1-bedroom containers on CA→NV: roughly $730–$1,730. Middle ground if you won't drive a box truck.
Full-service movers
| Home size | Full-service (CA → NV) | Container | Rental truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BR | $1,185–$3,568 | $730–$1,730 | $440–$808 |
| 2–3 BR | $2,086–$6,013 | $1,321–$2,632 | $446–$884 |
| 4+ BR | $3,409–$8,245 | $1,787–$3,223 | $538–$1,126 |
LA → Vegas full-service for a 1-bedroom often lands $1,400–$3,000 in route-specific quotes — 40–50% less than comparable CA→Texas moves because of distance.
Peak season (May–September) and end-of-month dates push quotes up. Mid-month moves in fall or winter often run 15–30% cheaper.
Verify every mover at FMCSA's USDOT lookup before you wire a deposit.
Part 2: Move-In Costs in Las Vegas
Vegas move-in is among the lightest in our Sun Belt benchmarks — but first-month utility deposits and summer AC hit after you sign.
Using our Las Vegas move-out benchmarks (~$1,400/mo average 1-bedroom):
| Line item | Las Vegas (1 BR) |
|---|---|
| First month's rent | ~$1,400 |
| Security deposit (1 mo typical) | ~$1,400 |
| Utility setup (electric, internet) | ~$280 |
| Subtotal before movers | ~$3,080 |
Nevada allows security deposits up to three months' rent for unfurnished units (NRS 118A.242), but one month's rent is standard in most Vegas leases. Landlords must return deposits within 30 days of move-out with an itemized statement.
No broker fee and no last-month-upfront requirement in our Vegas model — unlike San Francisco, where last month's rent upfront adds a full month of cash on move-in and move-out planning.
Las Vegas vs other Sun Belt cities on move-in cash:
| City | 1 BR rent (benchmark) | Typical move-in (first + deposit + utils) |
|---|---|---|
| Las Vegas | ~$1,400 | ~$3,080 |
| Phoenix | ~$1,500 | ~$3,280 |
| Austin, TX | ~$1,700 | ~$3,680 |
| Miami, FL | ~$2,200 | ~$4,680 |

Part 3: Leaving California
Security deposit timing
California landlords must return deposits within 21 days of move-out with an itemized statement (Civil Code §1950.5). Since AB 12 (effective July 1, 2024), security deposits are capped at one month's rent — that helps on new leases, but you still face a deposit gap: you pay Vegas before California refunds you.
Breaking a lease
Mid-lease departure can trigger full rent liability minus landlord's duty to re-rent (Civil Code §1951.2). Many landlords settle for 1–2 months' rent. On a $2,400 LA one-bedroom, that's $2,400–$4,800. SF at $3,200 hurts more.
Overlap rent
Paying both California and Vegas rent for 2–4 weeks is common when dates don't align. Budget $800–$1,600 on a one-bedroom — Vegas rent is low enough that overlap hurts less than a CA→Texas double-rent month.
Part 4: Las Vegas-Specific Costs After You Land
Summer electricity — non-negotiable
Vegas AC runs June through September like a second rent payment. Sustained 105°F+ weeks mean $250–$400/month peak bills on NV Energy (NV Energy is the default utility in Clark County). Budget this from month one, not after your first July surprise.
You'll need a car
Las Vegas is car-dependent — Henderson and Summerlin especially. The RTC bus system exists but most commutes assume driving. Budget:
- Auto payment / cash purchase if you were car-free in SF
- Insurance: typically $110–$190/month in Vegas — moderate nationally, less than Miami
- Gas and parking: varies; Strip-adjacent or downtown parking adds $80–$200/month
Vehicle registration
Nevada requires new residents to register within 30 days (Nevada DMV). Budget $300–$700 for a typical car including title/registration fees.
Water rates
Clark County water costs have risen as drought policy tightens. Budget $50–$80/month for water even in a one-bedroom — higher than you'd expect if you're coming from coastal California habits.
Renters insurance
$15–$22/month nationally for basic coverage — Vegas landlords increasingly require proof at lease signing.
No IRS moving deduction for civilians
Only active-duty military can deduct moving expenses federally (IRS Topic 455). Employer relocation packages are the main tax-advantaged help.
Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?
The move is a one-time bill. No Nevada state income tax + cheaper rent is a monthly deposit — if your gross salary holds up.
Our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer, standard deduction; California state tax + 1.3% CA SDI per EDD; Nevada has no state wage income tax):
| Gross salary | California take-home | Nevada (Las Vegas) take-home | Extra in NV (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | ~$72,794 | ~$79,180 | ~$6,400 |
| $120,000 | ~$84,744 | ~$93,250 | ~$8,500 |
| $140,000 | ~$96,330 | ~$106,956 | ~$10,600 |
On rent: $2,400 LA vs $1,400 Vegas saves ~$1,000/month (~$12,000/year) in our benchmarks. SF at $3,200 saves ~$1,800/month (~$21,600/year) vs Vegas.
A $5,000–$7,000 move from LA can break even in 3–6 months from tax + rent — if your Vegas offer didn't drop $20k and you're not paying Summerlin rents on a North Las Vegas budget.
Run your offer: LA → Las Vegas relocation calculator, SF → Las Vegas, or California → Nevada (state).

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill
- Move off-peak — October–March quotes on CA→Vegas are consistently lower.
- Leave from LA if you can — 270 miles vs 570 from the Bay Area cuts mover quotes roughly in half.
- Look at North Las Vegas or older Henderson pockets if commute allows — rent can run $150–$300/month below Summerlin in many listings.
- Sell heavy furniture before you leave California — replacing it in Vegas is often cheaper than hauling it over the Cajon Pass.
- Avoid one month of overlap rent — that's $1,400+ in Vegas alone.
- Budget July electricity from day one — a $350 NV Energy bill isn't a billing error; it's desert math.
- Verify the salary — Vegas comfortable salary in our model is ~$95k vs ~$140k in LA. Hospitality-heavy job markets can pay less than coastal tech. Run both numbers before you sign.
The Bottom Line
Moving from California to Las Vegas is the lowest-upfront major exit for most Southern California renters — 270 miles, ~$3,080 move-in cash, and no state income tax on the other side.
For most renters from LA or San Diego, plan $4,500–$8,000 in cash. From San Francisco, $9,000–$14,000 is realistic once lease break and Bay Area overlap enter the picture.
Vegas wins on monthly math for most coastal California transplants: ~$6,400+/year in tax savings at $100k gross, plus ~$1,000–$1,800/month in rent savings vs LA/SF in our benchmarks. But NV Energy in July and water rates will remind you the desert charges its own subscription fee.
Build the budget first. Compare offers second. Then decide if Vegas at $100k beats LA at $130k — that's what the relocation calculator is for.
