Denver has mountains and a 4.4% state tax. California has coastal rent and SDI. The move is longer than Phoenix but shorter than Texas — and Denver move-in is still a four-figure hit. Here's the California → Denver budget.
You're not asking whether Colorado has better hiking than California. You probably decided that on the first $2,600 lease renewal notice.
You're asking: How much cash do I actually need to get from a California lease to a Denver apartment without blowing up my savings before the first Mile High paycheck lands?
That's the question that catches people. Colorado's rent savings hit your bank account monthly — but they're smaller than the TikTok version suggests, and Colorado still taxes your wages. The moving invoice and your Denver deposit are due now, often before California sends your old deposit back.

The Short Answer: Plan on $7,000–$14,000 Up Front
California to Denver is a long-haul interstate move — roughly 1,016 miles from LA and ~1,252 miles from San Francisco.
For a typical renter moving from Los Angeles or the Bay Area to Denver:
| Budget tier | What's included | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Lean DIY | Rental truck, gas, Denver deposit + first month, utility hookups | $6,500–$9,000 |
| Standard move | Professional movers (1–2 BR), Denver move-in, travel, buffer | $8,500–$13,000 |
| Full reset | Full-service movers from SF, lease break, overlap rent, car setup | $12,000–$18,000+ |
Denver move-in is cheaper than California in our benchmarks — but more expensive than Phoenix or Houston, and the movers bill is longer than a CA→Arizona hop because of distance.
Our LA → Denver relocation calculator puts direct move costs (movers, travel, setup) around ~$4,200 for a one-bedroom renter — but Denver first month + deposit adds another ~$3,900 before you're in your own place.
Why Denver Specifically (Not Just "Colorado")
California → Denver is one of the busiest West Coast → Mountain West corridors — tech relocations, remote workers, and "I'm done with coastal prices but not ready for Texas humidity" searches all land here.
Versus Phoenix or Las Vegas from California: Denver offers mountains, four seasons, and a stronger tech/office market — but costs more. Phoenix rents run ~$1,500/mo in our benchmarks vs ~$1,800 in Denver. Arizona taxes wages at 2.5% flat; Colorado at 4.4% flat. Phoenix is cheaper upfront and on tax — Denver wins on job density and lifestyle, not on the spreadsheet alone.
Versus Texas from California: Texas has no state wage income tax. Colorado saves you ~$2,000/year at $100k gross vs California in our engine — Texas saves ~$6,400. Denver rent (~$1,800) sits between Austin (~$1,700) and coastal California (~$2,400–$3,200).
Versus staying in California: Denver's COL index in our data is 128 vs 166 in Los Angeles and 179 in San Francisco. Median 1-bedroom rent: ~$1,800 in Denver vs ~$2,400 in LA and ~$3,200 in SF in our move-out benchmarks.
The trade: Denver's RTD light rail can reduce car dependency if you live on a line — unlike Phoenix or Dallas. But most Denver transplants still budget for a car, and winter heating replaces California's mild coastal winters.
Part 1: Getting Your Stuff to Denver
Distances depend heavily on where you're leaving in California:
| Origin | Miles to Denver | Drive time (loaded truck) |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | ~1,016 | 14–15 hours; plan 1–2 nights |
| San Diego | ~1,070 | Similar to LA via I-15/I-70 |
| San Francisco / Bay Area | ~1,252 | 18–20 hours; plan 2–3 nights |
| Sacramento | ~1,200 | Similar to Bay Area |
moveBuddha's LA → Denver route prices the corridor at ~1,016 miles. SF → Denver runs ~1,252 miles — roughly 230 miles farther than LA, which pushes mover quotes up.
DIY rental truck
For a studio or one-bedroom on LA → Denver, moveBuddha's 2026 route data puts rental trucks at roughly $772–$1,466, plus fuel. Budget $520–$600 in diesel for a loaded truck on the full LA corridor; $650–$800 from the Bay Area.
Plan 1–2 motel nights from LA ($80–$150/night); 2–3 nights from SF. Don't try to hero-drive a loaded 26-footer through the Rockies in one shot.
Moving containers
1-bedroom containers on LA → Denver: roughly $1,441–$2,629. SF → Denver containers run $1,590–$2,800 for a studio/1BR. Good middle ground if you won't drive a box truck.
Full-service movers
| Home size | Full-service (LA → Denver) | Container | Rental truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BR | $2,511–$5,709 | $1,441–$2,629 | $772–$1,466 |
| 2–3 BR | $2,943–$6,991 | $1,765–$3,548 | $885–$1,723 |
| 4+ BR | $4,872–$9,924 | $2,380–$4,668 | $1,037–$2,228 |
SF → Denver full-service for a 1-bedroom runs $2,549–$5,907 in moveBuddha's route-specific data — at the long end of California origins.
Peak season (May–September) and end-of-month dates push quotes up. Mid-month moves in fall or winter often run 15–30% cheaper.
Verify every mover at FMCSA's USDOT lookup before you wire a deposit.
Part 2: Move-In Costs in Denver
Moving your couch is expensive. Securing a Denver apartment is where most people run out of money.
Using our Denver move-out benchmarks (~$1,800/mo average 1-bedroom):
| Line item | Denver (1 BR) |
|---|---|
| First month's rent | ~$1,800 |
| Security deposit (1 mo typical) | ~$1,800 |
| Utility setup (electric, internet) | ~$280 |
| Subtotal before movers | ~$3,880 |
Colorado caps security deposits at two months' rent for unfurnished units and one month for furnished (CRS §38-12-103). One month's rent is standard in Denver. Landlords must return deposits within 30 days of move-out (or up to 60 days if specified in the lease) with an itemized deduction list.
No broker fee and no last-month-upfront requirement in our Denver model — unlike San Francisco, where last month's rent upfront adds a full month of cash on move-in planning.
Denver vs California on move-in cash:
| City | 1 BR rent (benchmark) | Typical move-in (first + deposit + utils) |
|---|---|---|
| Denver | ~$1,800 | ~$3,880 |
| Los Angeles | ~$2,400 | ~$5,080 |
| San Francisco | ~$3,200 | ~$6,680* |
*SF includes last month's rent upfront in our model.

The deposit gap: California landlords must return deposits within 21 days of move-out (Civil Code §1950.5). Since AB 12 (effective July 1, 2024), security deposits are capped at one month's rent — that helps on new leases, but you still face a deposit gap: you pay Denver before California refunds you.
Part 3: Leaving California
Breaking a lease
Mid-lease departure can trigger full rent liability minus landlord's duty to re-rent (Civil Code §1951.2). Many landlords settle for 1–2 months' rent. On a $2,400 LA one-bedroom, that's $2,400–$4,800. SF at $3,200 hurts more.
Overlap rent
Paying both California and Denver rent for 2–4 weeks is common when dates don't align. Budget $1,200–$2,400 on a one-bedroom if timing is tight — more if you're overlapping $3,200 SF rent.
Final California bills
Last month's prorated utilities, PG&E or SCE true-up, parking pass cancellation — $150–$500 is normal.
Part 4: Denver-Specific Costs After You Cross the State Line
Winter heating — budget this on day one
Denver winters are real. First winter in a older apartment? Heating bills can hit $100–$180/month December through February. LA and SF renters don't always expect this line item — ask about average winter utility costs before you sign.
Car vs RTD
Denver has RTD light rail and bus lines that connect parts of downtown, Aurora, Lakewood, and the airport corridor. If you work downtown and live on a line, you might skip a second car. Most transplants still budget for one:
- Insurance: typically $120–$190/month in Denver
- Gas and parking: $80–$200/month depending on neighborhood
Vehicle registration
Colorado requires new residents to get a Colorado driver's license and register vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency (Colorado DMV). Budget $300–$700 for a typical car including title/registration fees.
Altitude and lifestyle costs
Denver sits at 5,280 feet. Budget a week of adjustment — and if outdoor recreation is why you're moving, price it honestly. A ski pass runs $800–$1,000/season; gear and mountain weekends add $100–$300/month if that's your lifestyle. Optional — but it's why many people pick Denver over Phoenix.
Renters insurance
$15–$22/month nationally for basic coverage — Denver landlords increasingly require proof at lease signing.
Property taxes (if you buy later)
Colorado effective property tax rates run ~0.55% of assessed value — lower than Texas or Illinois, but Denver home prices have climbed. Renters can ignore this for now; buyers should run numbers before house-hunting in $540k+ median markets.
No IRS moving deduction for civilians
Only active-duty military can deduct moving expenses federally (IRS Topic 455). Employer relocation packages are the main tax-advantaged help.
Part 5: When Does the Move Pay for Itself?
The move costs thousands once. Lower Colorado state tax + cheaper rent saves you every month — but Colorado is not a no-tax state, and Denver isn't 2015-cheap anymore.
Our 2026 paycheck engine (single filer, standard deduction; California state tax + 1.3% CA SDI per EDD; Colorado 4.4% flat income tax):
| Gross salary | California take-home | Denver (CO) take-home | Extra in CO (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | ~$72,794 | ~$74,780 | ~$2,000 |
| $120,000 | ~$84,744 | ~$87,970 | ~$3,200 |
| $140,000 | ~$96,330 | ~$100,796 | ~$4,500 |
On rent: $2,400 LA vs $1,800 Denver saves ~$600/month (~$7,200/year) in our benchmarks. SF at $3,200 saves ~$1,400/month (~$16,800/year) vs Denver.
Stack tax + rent and a $8,000–$12,000 move from LA can break even in 8–14 months — if your Denver salary didn't drop and you're not paying LoDo rents on an Aurora budget while buying a $900 Ikon pass you didn't budget for.
The cheat code: remote work paying California rates while living in Denver. That's when the spreadsheet gets interesting — but verify your employer's location policy first.

How to Shave Real Money Off the Bill
- Move off-peak — October–March quotes on California→Denver are consistently lower.
- Leave from LA or San Diego if you can — ~1,016 miles vs ~1,252 from the Bay Area cuts mover quotes meaningfully.
- Look at Aurora, Lakewood, or Thornton if commute allows — rent can run $200–$400/month below RiNo or Capitol Hill in many listings.
- Sell heavy furniture in California — hauling a couch 1,000+ miles over the Rockies is expensive; Denver has IKEA too.
- Time your lease overlap — one avoided month of double rent saves $1,800–$3,200+.
- Negotiate a relocation stipend — even $2,500–$5,000 from an employer changes the math.
- Don't assume Texas-level tax savings — Colorado's 4.4% flat rate saves ~$2,000/year at $100k vs California, not ~$6,400 like Texas. Run the full paycheck comparison before you pick Denver over Austin.
The Bottom Line
Moving from California to Denver isn't a weekend road trip and craft beer. For most renters from LA or San Diego, $7,000–$12,000 in cash is the honest planning range. From San Francisco, $12,000–$18,000 is realistic once lease break, last-month rent stacks, and Bay Area overlap enter the picture.
Denver still wins on monthly math for most coastal California transplants: ~$600–$1,400/month in rent savings vs LA/SF in our benchmarks, plus ~$2,000–$4,500/year in tax savings at typical salaries. But those savings are monthly. The moving bill is due upfront — and February heating will remind you why everyone owns a puffy jacket.
Build the budget first. Compare salaries second. Then decide if Denver at $115k beats LA at $140k — our relocation calculator exists for exactly that conversation.
