Tip on pre-tax or post-tax total?

Pre-tax (subtotal) — considered fairer. You tip on the food and service, not on the sales tax charged by the government.

Post-tax (total) — simpler. Many people just tip on the total since it's one number.

Example: $100 bill + 8% tax

20% on subtotal ($100)= $20.00 tip
20% on total ($108)= $21.60 tip

Difference: $1.60. Either is acceptable.

Common tipping questions

What is the standard tip for restaurants in the US?

For sit-down restaurants, 15–20% is the standard range. 15% is the traditional baseline for adequate service. 18% is common for good service. 20% or more for great service. In cities like NYC and San Francisco, 20% is the norm. Some payment screens suggest 20%, 22%, or 25%—you are not obligated to use those.

How much should I tip for delivery, rideshare, and other services?

Food delivery: 15–20% of the order total; more for large orders or bad weather. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft): 15–20%. Taxi: 15–20%, or round up. Bar/drinks: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Takeout/counter: 0–10%—custom varies. The service guide above shows typical ranges.

How do I split the bill and tip among a group?

Enter the bill total, choose your tip percentage, and set the number of people in the calculator. It shows the total with tip and the per-person amount. Our calculator assumes an equal split. For uneven splits (some ordered more), calculate each person's share of the subtotal first, then add their portion of the tip.

Is 15% tip still acceptable in 2026?

Yes. 15% remains the baseline for adequate service. However, 18–20% is now more common in most areas, and 20% is standard in higher-cost cities. Tip what reflects the service quality and your own budget.

How we calculate your tip
Formulas behind the tip amount, total, and per-person split shown above. Last reviewed 2026-06-25.

The tip amount, total, and per-person split shown above come from your bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people — calculated instantly in your browser, not from an external feed. We multiply the bill by the tip rate to get the tip, add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people when splitting. Below are the exact formulas, order of operations, and worked examples you can verify by hand.

Core formulas

MetricFormula
Tip amountBill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total (bill + tip)Bill + Tip amount
Tip per personTip amount ÷ Number of people
Total per personTotal ÷ Number of people
People countmax(1, numPeople) — zero or negative defaults to 1
RoundingAll amounts rounded to 2 decimal places (nearest cent)

Order of operations

1

Normalize number of people

People = max(1, numPeople)

If you enter 0 or a negative number, we treat it as 1 person so the calculator never divides by zero.

2

Calculate tip amount

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100

The tip is always a percentage of the bill amount you enter — whether that's pre-tax or post-tax is up to you.

3

Calculate total

Total = Bill + Tip

The amount you actually pay, including the gratuity.

4

Split per person (if multiple people)

Tip/person = Tip ÷ People; Total/person = Total ÷ People

Even split only — each person pays an equal share of bill and tip combined.

Worked example 1 — $75 bill, 20% tip, 1 person

Verify: $75.00 × 20% = $15.00 tip → $90.00 total

Worked example 2 — $100 bill, 20% tip, split 4 ways

$100.00 × 20% = $20.00 tip; total = $120.00

$20.00 ÷ 4 = $5.00 tip/person; $120.00 ÷ 4 = $30.00 each

What this calculator does not includeThis calculator performs even splits only — it does not handle unequal shares, itemized bills, or automatic gratuity already added to the check. It does not calculate sales tax; enter pre-tax or post-tax bill amounts as you prefer. Tipping customs vary by country — these guidelines reflect US norms. Gratuity on large parties (often 18–20% auto-added for 6+ guests) should be subtracted from your manual tip if already on the bill.

Frequently asked questions

For sit-down restaurants in the US, 15–20% is standard. 15% is adequate, 18% is common for good service, 20% for great service. For delivery and rideshare, 15–20% is typical. Use the presets above for quick calculation.

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is fairer — you're not tipping on sales tax. Tipping on the post-tax total is simpler. The difference is small ($1–2 on a $100 bill). Enter whichever you prefer in the calculator.

Enter the number of people in the calculator. It divides the total (bill + tip) evenly per person. For unequal splits, calculate the full tip first, then divide each person's share manually.

15–20% of the order total. Consider more for large orders, bad weather, or difficult delivery. The minimum recommended is $3–5 for small orders.

Yes. 15% is the traditional baseline for adequate service. 18–20% is now more common for good service. You are never obligated to tip a specific amount — tip based on service quality and your budget.
