Tip on tax or subtotal?
Custom varies. Some tip on the pre-tax subtotal (fairer to the server, since tax isn't service). Others tip on the total after tax (simpler). This calculator uses your chosen percentage on the amount you enter—use pre-tax if you prefer.
Common Questions About Tipping
What is the standard tip for restaurants in the US?
For sit-down restaurants, 15–20% is the standard range. 15% is the traditional baseline for adequate service. 18% is common for good service. 20% or more for great service. In some cities (e.g., NYC, San Francisco), 20% is increasingly the norm. Use the calculator above with 15%, 18%, or 20% and adjust based on service quality.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is considered fairer—you're tipping on the service (food and service), not on sales tax. Many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference is small: on a $100 bill with 8% tax, 20% on $100 = $20 vs 20% on $108 = $21.60. Either is acceptable. Enter the amount you prefer in the calculator—subtotal for pre-tax, total for post-tax.
How much should I tip for delivery, rideshare, and other services?
Food delivery: 15–20% of the order total; consider more for large orders or bad weather. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft): 15–20%. Taxi: 15–20%, or round up. Bar/drinks: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Takeout/counter: 0–10% or nothing—custom varies. The table above lists typical ranges by service type.
How do I split the bill and tip among a group?
Enter the bill total, choose your tip percentage, and enter the number of people. The calculator shows the total with tip and the per-person amount. For uneven splits (e.g., some ordered more), calculate each person's share of the pre-tip subtotal first, add their portion of the tip, or use a bill-splitting app. Our calculator assumes an equal split.
Is 15% tip still acceptable in 2025–2026?
Yes. 15% remains acceptable for adequate service. However, 18–20% has become more common in many areas, especially in higher-cost cities. Some restaurants suggest 20%, 22%, or 25% on payment screens—you're not obligated to use those. Tip what reflects the service and your budget. Use our percentage calculator for quick mental math.
