Federal income tax is national. Provincial and territorial rates (and Québec’s distinct stack) change how much each deductible dollar is worth.
Higher-tax provinces typically show larger modeled RRSP savings on the same salary and contribution. Lower-tax jurisdictions (e.g. Alberta) still benefit from the federal deduction, but the provincial slice is smaller.
Residence on December 31 of the tax year decides which provincial brackets apply. Working in another province does not change that rule for this calculator.
For 2026, the CRA RRSP dollar limit is $33,810. New room for the year is generally the lesser of 18% of prior-year earned income and that dollar limit, plus unused room, minus pension adjustments.
Earned income for RRSP purposes includes employment and self-employment income and certain other amounts — not interest, dividends, capital gains, or pension income. Your personal limit appears on your Notice of Assessment or Form T1028.
This calculator estimates tax savings for a chosen contribution amount; it does not verify whether you have enough room. Over-contributions can attract a 1% per month tax on excess above the $2,000 lifetime buffer (CRA).
