What Is a Pay Stub?

A pay stub (or paycheck stub) is a document that shows the details of a single paycheck: gross wages, taxes withheld (federal, state, Social Security, Medicare), other deductions (e.g. 401k, health insurance), and net pay—the amount you actually receive. Many employers provide a pay stub with each paycheck or via a payroll portal.

Our pay stub generator lets you create a stub for your own records when you need a quick summary of a pay period. For official proof of income, use stubs or a letter from your employer.

What to Include on a Pay Stub

A typical pay stub includes:

  • Employer and employee names and pay period / pay date
  • Gross pay — earnings before any deductions
  • Federal income tax withheld (from W-2 Box 2)
  • State income tax withheld (from W-2 Box 17, if applicable)
  • Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) withheld
  • Other deductions — 401k, health insurance, etc.
  • Net pay — take-home amount after all deductions
