About Australia Inflation Data

Our Australia inflation calculator uses Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) (Consumer Price Index, Australia (cat. 6401.0), base 2011โ€“12 = 100 (rebase varies)). CPI measures the average change in prices paid by consumers for a representative basket of goods and services.

Australiaโ€™s CPI is published by the ABS. The RBA targets consumer inflation of 2โ€“3% on average. Post-pandemic inflation peaked above that band; 2024 annual averages moved closer to the target but cumulative inflation since 2020 still reshaped real wages.

When Prices Rise

When CPI rises, your AUD salary buys less unless it grows at least as fast. That is a real pay cut even if the nominal number went up.

Maintaining Purchasing Power

This calculator shows what your salary would need to be in the end year to keep the same real purchasing power in Australia.

How calculations work

Formula: Adjusted Salary = Original Salary ร— (End Year CPI รท Start Year CPI). Uses official Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) annual averages.

Worked example: A$75,000 in 2020 โ†’ 2026

Australia ยท Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

Using Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data, cumulative inflation from 2020 to 2026 is about 19.4%. That means A$75,000 in 2020 needs roughly A$89,554 in 2026 to buy the same basket of goods and services in Australia.

Key Metrics Explained

What the Australia calculator outputs mean

Inflation-Adjusted Salary

What your starting salary would be worth in the end year, adjusted for inflation. This is the salary needed today to maintain the same purchasing power as your original salary.

Purchasing Power Change

The percentage change in your ability to buy goods and services. Negative values mean purchasing power decreased (you can buy less); positive values mean it increased.

Real Salary Growth

The difference between your inflation-adjusted salary and starting salary in dollar terms. Shows whether you've gained or lost purchasing power โ€” not just nominal dollars.

Cumulative Inflation

The total CPI increase from the start year to the end year. E.g., 22% cumulative inflation means the same basket of goods costs 22% more over that period.

Why Use This Australia Calculator?

Benchmark AUD pay against official Australia CPI so you know whether raises preserved purchasing power.

Negotiating a raise โ€” know if you're asking for a real increase
Comparing job offers across different years or time periods
Retirement planning โ€” understand what income you'll need in the future
Understanding if cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) actually kept pace

When to Use It

Got a raise?

Check if you gained real purchasing power or just kept up with inflation.

Old salary comparison?

"I made $60K in 2015 โ€” what is that in today's dollars?" Use the estimator mode.

Long-term planning?

Know what income you'll need in 10โ€“20 years to maintain your lifestyle.

COLA review?

Verify that a cost-of-living adjustment matches actual CPI data.

Raise negotiation & planning tips (Australia)

Negotiating with CPI

Enterprise agreements and annual reviews often reference CPI. Confirm whether the employer uses headline CPI or trimmed mean, and over which quarter. Matching headline CPI keeps real AUD wages flat.

Long-term planning

Superannuation balances and retirement drawdowns should be stress-tested for 2.5โ€“3.5% inflation. Convert an older AUD salary with this calculator before comparing job offers across years.

Local terms: ABS CPI, real wage, cost of living, enterprise agreement

Compound inflation โ€” future salary needed to keep purchasing power

Inflation compounds. Formula: Required Salary = Current Salary ร— (1 + rate)^years. Table shows a $100,000 salary (any currency) under constant inflation rates โ€” useful for Australia retirement and career planning.

We look up annual-average CPI for each year (with interpolation or projection where needed), then scale your salary by the CPI ratio between years. Order of operations

1

Look up CPI for each year

Annual-average CPI from official series; interpolate or project if needed

US uses BLS CPI-U annual averages. UK uses ONS CPI (D7BT). Canada uses Statistics Canada annual CPI. Other countries use estimated CPI growth where full historical tables are not loaded in this tool.

2

Scale salary by CPI ratio

Adjusted = salary ร— (end CPI รท start CPI)

This answers: what salary in the end year would buy the same basket of goods as your original salary in the start year? It is not a forecast of what you will actually earn.

3

Measure purchasing power loss

If CPI rose, unchanged nominal salary buys less

Purchasing power change is negative when prices rose. A flat $75,000 salary from 2020 to 2025 lost real buying power even though the dollar amount never changed.

4

Build the yearly table

Repeat the ratio for each year from start through end

Each row shows CPI, year-over-year inflation, inflation-adjusted salary, and purchasing power relative to the start year (100% in the first year).

5

Estimator mode uses the same engine

Past salary โ†’ today's equivalent in one step

The โ€œWhat Should I Earn Today?โ€ tab calls the same CPI ratio math. The result is the salary you would need now to match past purchasing power.

What we do not model on this page

We use annual-average CPI, not month-by-month paycheck timing. Recent-year CPI values for 2025โ€“2026 may be projected where official annual averages are not yet final. Countries without full CPI tables in our engine use a simplified ~3% annual estimate. US city multipliers are cost-of-living estimates, not official BLS metro CPI series. We do not model your actual raises, bonuses, taxes, or benefitsโ€”only what salary would be needed to keep pace with measured inflation. Results are illustrative, not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Australia

This page is pre-set to Australia and uses AUD with official CPI from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) (Consumer Price Index, Australia (cat. 6401.0), base 2011โ€“12 = 100 (rebase varies)). Results reflect Australia inflation โ€” not a global average.

Official annual average CPI from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) (series: Consumer Price Index, Australia (cat. 6401.0)). The 2024 annual average inflation figure referenced here is ~3.2% (2024 annual average, ABS CPI).

Adjusted Salary = Original Salary ร— (End Year CPI รท Start Year CPI), using Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) annual averages. That is the salary needed in the end year to keep the same purchasing power.

Prices in Australia rose by about ~3.2% on average in 2024. If your raise was smaller than that, your real purchasing power fell even if your nominal salary increased.

Using Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data, about 19.4% cumulative inflation from 2020 to 2026 implies roughly 89,554 AUD in 2026 to match 75,000 AUD in 2020. Use the calculator above for any other amount.

Enterprise agreements and annual reviews often reference CPI. Confirm whether the employer uses headline CPI or trimmed mean, and over which quarter. Matching headline CPI keeps real AUD wages flat.

Nominal salary is the face value in AUD. Real salary is that amount adjusted for CPI inflation. Only real salary tells you whether you can buy more or less than before.

Yes. Enter the older salary and year as the start, and todayโ€™s year as the end โ€” or use โ€œWhat Should I Earn Today?โ€ mode. The tool uses Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to convert purchasing power.
